In less than a decade, social media has deeply transformed modes of communication both in the personal and professional sphere, offering new means to stimulate, accelerate and leverage the social interactions between individuals or groups. Among social media one social network site has played an important role: Facebook. At the end of 2013 Facebook reported a little over 1.2 billion users. With a world population of approximately 7.2 billion meaning that roughly one out of seven people on earth have a Facebook account. This shows the extent to which Facebook impacts our society. The question remains, is there a negative correlation with Facebook usage and happiness? With happiness becoming a key topic of contemporary debates, studying the relation between the two has become inevitable for todays sociologists. It may very well be so that social engagement via Facebook does not adhere to the same benefits. As with all issues both supporters and opponents have strong arguments pertaining to their point of view. Regardless of opinion in this matter it should be clear that the following is a given: Although Facebook aims to enable people to share and increase both the openness as well as the connectedness of the world, Facebook continuously proves to have negative effects on our overall well-being of our society.

Facebook has proven itself to have a non-deniable negative affect on society. There is correlation effect between Facebook usage and well-being. It is fair to assume that the more you use Facebook the more susceptible you are to becoming unhappy. We should not forget that the way we use Facebook is also an important factor. By actively engaging on their website we reverse the negative impact it may have on our well being. On the other hand by passively browsing we slowly let the social network make us lonelier and more miserable.
