Does Social Media Affect Teen Self-esteem Teens on social media have been around for many years. Have you ever thought of the Internet being a place where teen’s self-esteem may be affected in a negative way? However, it doesn 't mean that social media is out to purposely make people feel this way, it 's all how the teens per take. Many people don’t realize that the little things others post on social media can affect someone in the long run. This is especially true with young teenagers who have access to the internet and social media platforms. I strongly believe that social media does affect teens self-esteem by lowering it due to the reason of advertisement, personal image, and bullying.
What does having low self-esteem mean? As stated on "UC Davis Medical Center" Low esteem means "A person with low self-esteem feels unworthy, incapable, and incompetent. In fact, because the person with low self-esteem feels so poorly about him or herself, these feelings may actually cause the person 's continued low self-esteem." This can have a negative effect on someone long term or short. The teen might feel alone and this can be causing serious cases like suicidal thoughts. Another can be short term, meaning the teen might be upset for a while but they can get over it.

A person with low self esteem feels he is not confident enough, incapable of doing the tasks, and incompetent (don`t have proper understanding of who he is). If the person is less confident he is going to feel poor and lonely every time. These feelings may actually lead that person into break down.

According to a report conducted by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in 2012, ninety-five percent of individuals aged 12-17 use the internet; and eighty-one percent of those use social network sites (Pew Interest). Although it is known that social media can have a useful impact on lives, often times people forget that with a positive comes a negative.
