Were you ever a witness to a car crash? If so, did you wonder if drunk driving caused it? In Virginia alone, 27%of fatalities are from drunk driving crashes. In 1982, Ronald Reagan said that drunk driving is now America’s greatest problem. Therefore, to reduce further accidents, and prevent future fatalities or injuries, drunk drivers should be imprisoned for the first offense. Everybody makes mistakes. Going to jail may be too harsh for the first offense, but accidents caused by drunk driving, including first offense drivers, can have damage costs up to $52 million a year per state! On the road, drunk drivers, who are not paying close enough attention to the road, cause ⅓ of fatalities every year since 1996. Also, every 90 seconds, injuries, from this disastrous type of driving, occur. A drunk driver will drive approximately 80 times DUI before their arrest for the first offense. Every one of these 80 times could be a chance to have a crash, injury, or fatality happen. Anyone can be hurt on the road with a drunk driver. Alcohol’s effects can only alter your concentration....
