It is not distance that keeps people apart, but a lack of communication. Mobile communication is how people in society communicate to one another through talking, texting or sending data over a wireless network. According to the Pew Research Center 's Internet & American Life Project, more than 90 percent of adults who lived in the United States in 2014 owned cell phone. Cell phones have become a status symbol in addition to the convenience and security that comes from owning them. Although cell phones are playing an important role in the modern world with their endless advantages, they also have their disadvantages such as causing health issues or even being the biggest problem in modern relationships. First off, cell phones make people prioritize the wrong methods of communications. Rosen states, "Cell phones encourage talk, not conversation"(45). Shallow and meaningless small talk on the phones is replacing deep, genuine face-to-face conversation in today 's society. People are losing interest in real conversations and focusing more on their phone 's notifications. In a world where people are convinced that phone alerts are the top priority, they become dependent on digital communication. Psychologists point out the Triangular theory of love which requires three main ingredients: commitment, passion, and intimacy. Intimacy encompasses feelings of attachment, closeness, and of being connected and bonded to one another. Closeness between two people can be hard to reach and maintain when there are constant distractions like cell phones. Cell phones also affect people 's manners and basic common sense. There was a time when phones were not allowed in schools, libraries, churches or theaters. The world as we know it today is one where people update their Facebook status during church services, retweet J. Cole 's tweet on Twitter in the library or family members pulling their phones out at the restaurant while they are having dinner.
