Date rape is a type of sexual assault that is defined as forcible sexual intercourse by a male friend of a woman on a voluntary social engagement. However, the woman did not intend to consent to the sexual advances by the male and resisted these acts by verbal refusals and physical resistance. One in every four women will be the victim of a sexual assault during the duration of their college enrollment. Unfortunately, for the most part women do not have any control over these situations because many of them are not educated on this topic. Alcohol surpasses date rape drugs such as GHB and roofies. When women become intoxicated their thought process becomes inhibited. Being intoxicated does not give consent to men to have sexual intercourse with women, which is illegal (). The men are trying to take advantage of the women because they have no control. These men are called perpetrators and the women are their victims. A study shows that college men who play intense athletics have a higher chance to commit date rapes compared to men who aren’t in sports. Men who are a part or fraternities are also more likely to commit date rapes than men who live in regular dorms. Fraternities have been organizing and holding training sessions. These sessions are necessary in order to reveal ways in which sexual assaults can be prevented. An unbelievably disappointing fact of colleges is that they are more focused on making a profit than they are about protecting their students. A bystander is someone who watches something happen but do not do anything to help stop the incident. Colleges should teach men not to be bystanders and instead be upstanders. An upstander is the exact opposite of a bystander. They should inform women on how to be cautious when they are at parties. Women should never leave their drink unattended in a bar or party. Men are very sneaky, when women leave their drink unattended this is the time when they slip drugs into their drink. They shouldn’t drink such an excessive amount to the point where they can’t remember anything. They should learn how to be safe. Women should be given the opportunity to enroll in self-defense classes. In return, they would be prepared if they were ever in a rape situation.
