PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES ASSIGNMENT 1 – REFLECTION ON PROFESSIONAL ROLES THROUGH CASE STUDIES
Section 1: Overview of roles possible for Construction Management graduates
Construction Management graduates are left with a diverse range of opportunities which they may endeavour. These include the following:
Construction Project Managers: In control of the entire process of the construction of building projects on the construction site (Training WA career centre, 2011)
 Estimators: Compare quotes and break down the entire project into parts in order to forecast approximate costs and budgets (HowDoIBecomeA.co.uk, 2000-2014) and (StudentScholarships.org, 2009-2014)
 Contracts Manager: Health and safety concerns are considered their main role as well as managing client expectations and negotiating sub-contracts (CareerStructure.com, 2014)
 Planner: Organises the work of the estimators and project manager to develop a project plan, schedules and sometimes capital cost estimates (HumanResources.Hrvinet.com, 2010)
 Quantity Surveyor: Estimate and observe costs from the early stages of a project up to the completion of the project (Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, 2014)
 Site Manager/foreman: Supervises the construction site each day and ensures that tasks are completed safely and to the directed plans. (CareerStructure.com, 2014)

...ormal for Project Managers to work beyond the standard 40 hour week so deadlines can be met (College Grad, 1996-2014), the Project Manager is responsible and accountable for any accidents/incidents on site and may receive fines/penalties as a consequence, as a Project Manager I may be left with no or minimal work for some time (days/weeks/months) due to the increased competition in the construction industry.
I am strongly confident that by pursuing a career in the construction industry as a Project Manager is beyond doubt the most suitable career. As elaborated above I occupy the appropriate skills that will assist myself as Project Manager in the construction industry. In addition, the benefits that may be accomplished surpass the challenges and detriments that may be confronted to supplement my interest in achieving the position as a Construction Project Manager.
