INTRODUCTION

Humanity has been interested in stimulants for centuries, from ancient civilizations using hallucinogens in an attempt to commune with their gods to the rise of coffee. This has culminated in to the more recent development of drugs such as stimulants and cognitive enhancers. Some argue that this is a natural progression of humanity’s desire for self-improvement. Subsequently, there are those who believe that enhancing one’s cognitive abilities is unfair and gives an advantage to wealthier populations who can afford these drugs. The debate on cognitive enhancement has taken on a similar form as the debate on steroids in sports. Cognitive enhancement represents one of the most debated topics in the neuroscience community Within the last ten years, increasing attention has been given to the use of cognitive enhancers, but there is still only a limited amount of information concerning the use, effect and functioning of cognitive enhancement in daily life on healthy subjects (Clemlow and Walker, 2014).
Stimulant medications are often used for the treatment of ADHD. The medications treat the symptoms of ADHD such as difficulty focusing and lack of impulse control. Some common stimulant medications are Adderall and Ritalin. These medications are controlled substances, so they require a prescription from a physician, usually after the patient is diagnosed with ADHD. Medication misuse occurs when the medication is not used for what it is prescribed, including performance enhancement and recreational use. Medication misuse turns to abuse when a user consumes the substance in amounts or with methods that are harmful to themselves or others (Benson, Flory, Humpherys, & Lee,
