785 Words2 Pages

Based on the research that has been conducted by Gupta (2005), Bhapkar et. al (2013), Subissi et. al (2010), and ciclopirox is available in 8% nail lacquer topical solution. Ciclopirox nail lacquer is a clear, colourless pale to yellow solution that is used to treat the infection on the fingernails and toenails and this each gram ciclopirox nail lacquer do contain 80 mg of ciclopirox (Gupta, 2005). For these ciclopirox derivatives, ciclopirox is an active ingredient to treat the onychomycosis safely and effectively. This can be seen in the Bhapkar et. al (2013) that ciclopirox nail lacquer is the first topical agent that has been used by the Canada population and the only topical antifungal that has been approved in Canada in order to treat onychomycosis.
Subissi et. al (2010), stated that the mechanism of action of ciclopirox is varied from other topical anti fungal that act through ergosterol inhibition. This unique and the level mechanism of action has give a very low potential for the resistance development in pathogenic fungi.

MECHANISM OF ACTION
Ciclopirox acts differently with more complex mechanism of action as it is free acid of ciclopiroxolamine and having same spectrum activity to ciclopiroxolamine (Subissi et. al, 2010). This also has been explained by Bhapkar et.al (2013) that ciclopirox is a synthetic drug that has broad spectrum activity that can inhibit the growth of dermatophytes, yeast as well as moulds. Ciclopirox acts as antifungal and anti bacterial drug and as it target the metabolic process of the fungal cell and cause intracellular depletion of essential substrate (example: amino acid) and ions (example: potassium). According to Gupta et.al (2005) and Bhapkar et.al (2013), mechanism of action of ciclopi...

ADVERSE EFFECT
Normally ciclopirox nail lacquer is well tolerated. Some cases has been reported about this nail lacquer that cause light reddening or scaling skin when the nail lacquer come into contact with the skin that adjacent to the nail (Gupta et.al, 2000). The most frequent adverse effect of the usage ciclopirox nail lacquer can be seen in the Sibissi et.al (2010) researc that caused local and dermalogical effects and it was rarely for the severe condition that require for the discontinuation of the medication. Another side effects that has been informed by Bhapkar et.al (2013) is that it do caused nail disorder like ingrown toenail, irritation, discolouration and changes in shape. The most frequent adverse effects are periungal erythema and erythema of the proximal nail fold.
