Every single day, the well-being and safety of children across the United States are in danger of abuse and neglect. “In 2007 there were over 3 million reports of child maltreatment in the United States” (United States Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS}, 2009). Child maltreatment contains many different types of abuses such as sexual, physical, psychological or emotional abuse, and neglect. The legitimate numbers of maltreatment can be inaccurate due to abuse being unreported and at times tough to notice. Children are at risk for a mixture of negative health outcomes because of child maltreatment. Daycares and preschools are around such abuse daily and must know how to recognize and respond appropriately to maltreatment. Children who are suspected of being maltreated are often unreported to child-protection services (CPS). The lack of awareness to the evidence of child maltreatment and the procedure for reporting these acts to CPS and the idea that reporting abuse will do more harm than good are excuses to why people do not report. Because of my desire to help children, I decided to intern at the Head Start program in Rutland, VT. The Head Start program is a program in the United States that presents extensive early childhood education, nutrition, health, and parent involvement services to underprivileged children and their families. This program is extremely strict in determining who can and cannot work in the type of environment they offer. As for me, before even looking at the classroom or meeting the children, I needed to complete several forms focusing on if I have committed any childlike offenses. They also did a background check on me as well as a personal interview. If I or my background check proves to be threatening to be near a child, I obviously would not been able to intern
