I knew at an early age I wanted to be my own boss and help people better themselves. My mother, a social worker, and father, owner of a restaurant, I had exposure to the most creative and altruistic of individuals. Some would agree I was destined to become a psychologist or business woman. My father taught me the qualities required to run a successful business. His mantra was, “When we are happy, the customer is happy.” That mantra proved to be true year after year, making my father’s restaurant one of Chicago’s most successful. My mother dedicated the greater part of her life to mothering hers and other children. My mother worked for several government agencies focused on bettering the lives of individuals in impoverished communities. My years as a business owner and stylist have proven I have mastered a great deal of both fields, however, the time has come to complement more of the practical with the theoretical. When I began the search for the ideal graduate program, I had a few requirements. It was important that the school be based in Chicago, had an exceptional reputation, and placed great emphasis on celebrating diversity. The Chicago School of Professional Psychology fits the bill. A Chicago-based program was important because of my history with an established clientele. A program with an exceptional reputation was important because I wanted to ensure that I was in good hands. Finally, I desired to receive education from a school that celebrates the unique qualities that each person brings to the greater good of the world. I would hope to allow myself to distinguish myself from other students and make myself more prevalent and outstanding in my specific classes. As I would like to purse a degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminology, I would like to become an ‘All around Psychologist’ dabbling in numerous sections of the ‘Psychology life.’ It is my belief that this HBCU would give me all mental and educational tools that will aid me in being the best in my chosen field. It is not that I do not like the educational system at my current university, it is just that i feel as though I can excel beyond measures at my new university coming this Spring.
Think of the most beautiful city in world. You are walking the streets, taking in the scenery in complete admiration of a city built by men. Then one day you go to sleep, a few hours later you awaken, and that beautiful city is completely destroyed. The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 was one of the largest disasters in American history (“The Great Chicago”). After many failed attempts to put out the fire, people were left homeless and helpless to rebuild their city. Thankfully, after every tragedy there is always a recovery.
In the early 1960s, the Civil Rights Movement brought many accusations and complaints towards the Chicago Board of Education. Due to this pressure, the Board allowed three major studies of the Chicago public schools which clearly denoted the segregation problems of the school system, over a decade after the Supreme Court’s decision of the famous Brown v Board of Education case. The Hauser Report and the Havighurst Report, both published in 1964, described the “gross racial imbalance” in Chicago public schools, where “Negro schools” tended to be more overcrowded and experience more drop-outs and lower average scores than predominantly white schools (Coons 85). In 1967 the recently appointed Superintendent of the Chicago schools, James Redmond, created a committee that published the other major report on the public schools of Chicago in 1967, entitled Increasing Desegregation of Faculties, Students, and Vocational Education Programs. This report focused on the teaching climate of Chicago schools, the boundaries of schools districts, vocational education programs, and public understanding of current issues, “aimed at reversing a pervasive social condition that has become deeply rooted in our society” (Chicago Board 2).
Every morning on my way to school I often pick up the Red Eye newspaper and read the latest news happening in Chicago. As I skim the pages I often see a section that shows the homicide tracker in the city of Chicago. This section of the newspaper shows numerous of deaths occurred in a month in a specific area. Consequently, similar to this homicide tracker on the newspaper the following articles have about the same homicide stories that have occurred in the city of Chicago years ago. In the book The Devil in the White City by Eric Larson illustrates the dreadful events about crime, violence, and illness all leading to death; The Coldest Case: The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre by Jonathan Eig describes a tragic murder of six men by the mob making Chicago seen as a gangland murder capital; The Untouchables by Eliot Ness tells the conflict Eliot Ness experienced trying to put the gangster Al Capone out of business, and For the Thrill of It: Leopold, Loeb, and the Murder That Shocked Jazz Age Chicago by Simon Baatz retells the case of judge Clarence Darrow which was to defend two boys of receiving the death penalty. The combination of these three stories shows serious issues such as crime, corruption and violence that are plaguing Chicago.
Chicago has played a major role in American Literary history. As African American writers struggled to express their unique literary voice, they sought to celebrate diversity of the American people and to develop a unifying national identity for themselves (Woolley).
In the essay “Suitcase Lady” by Christie McLaren, she proves that even people you least expect to be successful can be. Although the main character may not be successful in the business aspect, she is successful! She may be in an uncomfortable situation but as she states here: “I...always try to do the best to help people- the elderly, and kids, and my country, and my city of Toronto, Ontario” (5). Even though she is homeless, she still is relatively happy and she is respectful of other people, making her successful. However, she is unsuccessful when it comes to her family. The suitcase lady seemed to have struggled with money for quite sometime making it hard for her to start a family, “We never got along well because I didn’t bring him up. I was too poor. He never called me mama” (4). She seems quite upset about the fact that her own son and her do not get along. She clearly does love her child but she had a hard time making sure he had a high quality of life so she had to give him away. Have you ever wondered what it takes to be successful? Some people are not born into success or wealth. Many successful entrepreneurs had a vision they turned into reality. Samuel Truett Cathy is one prime example of a man who lived out his convictions. An inventor of the beast-of-chicken sandwich, mall counter service in the days before food courts and Sunday closing as a policy, Truett Cathy celebrated his 80th birthday in 2001. Many might think of him as a true modern-day role model and hero. Some sees him as the Chick-fil-a man. From his book “It’s Easier to Succeed than to Fail”, Cathy represented a real-life case history showing that a determined and energetic entrepreneur can overcome anything. Cathy stated, “ The secret to success is not secret at all. It is very obvious, but we are too often blinded to the truth.” (Cathy, p. 191)
During my first semester in college, when I was enrolled in Intro to Psychology (Psych 101) I established a new love for school and learning. I began so engrossed in every aspect of it that I never wanted class to end. It was from then on that I decided to pursue my B.A. in psychology. After completing three years, I realized that there is still so much knowledge to be obtained in this field. Coming all the way from Louisiana the Seattle, I have now become a student in the BA completion program. This quarter at the university I am studying psychology in the form of social research and redefining the role of a counselor. Through the guise of becoming a more serious student, I have been able to look at myself as a learner as well as take a look at the profession I want to practice. What do you think about going to school year round with little breaks here and there, but not your traditional three month summer break? Year round schooling has been a decision argued with the government, teachers, principals and parents. Many kids and adults like to relax on their three month break. Many students are used to having two week winter break, one week spring break, and three months of summer break. Overall, one three month break would benefit than having three-week breaks broken up throughout the school year.
For me, it didn’t click that I can turn these characteristics and skills into a career that I would enjoy until I started meeting regularly with my High School Counselor, Mrs. Corbin. I met with Mrs. Corbin once a day for about an hour in order to receive my community service hours that were required for graduation. Much like me, she has a passion for helping others and she carried me through my entire senior year. She would show my how to fill out college applications, help determine which college was the best fit for me, we spoke a lot about what major I should consider, and give me advice or just listen to what was going on in my life. She really inspired me to be on this path that I am today because I want to give others the help, love, and support she gave me. ... I opened up an office furniture manufacturing plant to support dad’s business. Both businesses ran successfully until my father’s death, when they were sold. The money from the sales gave my mother a sizeable nest egg to retire on, which would have made my father very happy.
Over the last eight years I have watched my Aunt and Grandfather start a completely new hospice. My aunt is the main boss of the business, my grandfather just put in money so that she was able to actually start the business. Over those last eight years she has had some of the roughest times in her life. Being a single mother is hard enough, but then to start a business from scratch made it much more difficult to not only raise a family by herself. My aunt has had many problems in the last eight years and her business is now getting to the point of choosing what she does. I see some teenagers saying they want to own a business when they get older, but they only think of the money they can earn, the people they can tell what to do, and the fact that they can work when they want to work and no one can tell them otherwise. My aunt has put in more work to her business in the last eight years than I have done homework assignments in my school career. When one owns a business, they must work constantly because there is always something that needs to be done. Whether there is a problem to sort out, bills to pay, or numbers and accounting paperwork to figure out, there is always something that they must do. I can remember staying the night at her house staying up late and playing video games while right down the hall she was in the office still working on paperwork at one and two in the morning.

She is always searching for ways to improve her persona, and live a happier life. About five years ago my mother, my sister and I moved from Ukraine here to the United States. The first year in the United States was tough for us because we did not know English, however, we all worked hard and today we speak English fairly well.
