i. Car Body Car bodies are usually made of steel or aluminium. They both have different properties and prices ranges that make it ideal. Aluminium has a lower density meaning the car will be lighter than if it was made from steel. It also doesn’t corrode easily so a car made of aluminium will last longer than that made from steel as the steel contains iron which will corrode. In saying this aluminium is much more expensive, and although it has better properties is may take the price of the car up and over the limit that is wanted for it. Steel has many great functions for a car body. It is hard and strong because of the small amount of carbon content that it has which strengthens it. It is also added with small amounts of other metals to strengthen it even more. Steel is easily shaped because of its malleable properties and can be poured into moulds, cooled and then new products formed making it ideal for body panels and chassis. This means that old steel parts can be melted into new pieces for new cars making it reusable. Steel is also plentiful making it an ideal source for car manufacturers. Overall I would recommend steel for car body manufacturing as it has all the ideal properties for a car and is cheaper than other metals. ii. 4 Cylinder Engine Block I would recommend using an aluminium alloy to cast a cylinder block. It is ideal for the properties needed including having to withstand the heat and pressure that exists inside the engine block. The only difference that it has between the traditional engine block made of cast iron is that it has a low density which is ideal as it means it is lighter and therefore the car can travel faster. The blocks can be recycled back into aluminium parts again once finished with or can b... ... middle of paper ... ... between it and makes a full structure very well bonded. It can also crumble easily so that it can absorb the pressure of any forces that may act on it. Overall I think Carbon Fibre is the best option for the car because it has all the desired properties that are needed for the car.
