When Bono stated that “The world needs more Canada”, he was referring to increased need for Canadian identity. Identity is defined as the condition of being oneself or itself, and not another. As individuals, we show our identity through name, attire, or belief. Canadian identity was often labelled as a popular discussion among social scientists and historians, due to the inability to procure a time when Canadian identity prospered. Canadian identity is often easily distinguishable from others, due to its flag and historical achievement. This is because, it was the time when Canada established its independence and assembled formidable achievements. In other words, more Canada, equals a better world.

Since the British Empire conquered North America, Canada has been a tightly connected colony of Britain. Canada has always under British rule and their cultures and national identity copied each other. However, after the Second Cold War Canada became culturally different in comparison to Britain and was lacking their own individual national identity. Joining NORAD, introducing a new Canadian flag, and fact that Canada’s Constitution was patriated helped ameliorate an identity for Canada. These advances of becoming an autonomous country after the Second World War helped Canada where it is today.
The first thing we should examine is what exactly is meant by “strong national identity”. A very good example of strong national identity is the U.S.. I doubt there is a man on this planet who is not familiar with the U.S.. People immediately recognize their flag, and most people can tell you quite a bit about them. In 1995 U.S. President Bill Clinton stated his view of Canada in a speech where he declared, “Canada has shown the world how to balance freedom with compassion and tradition with innovation, in your efforts to provide health care to all your citizens, to treat senior citizens with the dignity and respect they deserve...”(Canada Today 9). The confederation all started in 1763, with The Royal Proclamation. Britain decided that pacifying First nation was the best alternative to a costlier war. This proclamation created a boundary between the First Nations and the British Colonies. In the next 50 years or so, the Quebec Act, which revoked the Royal Proclamation, and Treaty of Paris, which recognized British North America to independently exist, and the Constitutional Act, happened. The culture of Canada refers to the shared values, attitudes, standards, and beliefs that are a representative of Canada and Canadians. Throughout Canada's history, its culture has been influenced by American culture because of a shared language, proximity, television and migration between the two countries. Over time, Canadian-American relations have helped develop Canada’s identity during the years 1945-1982; thus introducing changing social norms, media and entertainment. In support of this, due to the United States being approximately 9.25 times larger in population and having the dominant cultural and economic influence, it played a vital role in establishing Canada’s identity. With Canada being its neighbour, naturally, the United States would influence their way of life upon Canada.
Bilingualism is the ability to communicate and write in both of Canada’s official languages, English, and French. In addition, 72 percent of Canadians supported English-French bilingualism which is as a part of Canadian culture(Baluja and Bradshaw, June 22, 2012). The reason why, in Canada, bilingualism was adopted owes to its status as a colony. Over time immigrants came to use the dominant language, which was English. With the defeat of France, England and English became the dominant power. As a result, the Royal commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism was made in the 1960’s.
