Baptism: The First Influential Sacrament
Baptism is one of the first rites of passage a person could go through. It usually happens during the first couple of months when a child is born. Baptism is a sacrament that cleanse and removes original sin and personal guilt, which guides a person to Christianity. It derives from the Greek word “baptizein” which means to wash or to immerse. During the ceremony of Baptism, the person will become a believer of Christ and accept the grace of the Holy Spirit. Baptism not only stands at the beginning of growth, but as a symbol of it. Baptism is widely practiced due to its fundamentality to the individual as well as the supporters. It is just one of the seven sacraments that Christ inflicted on the church.
Although Baptism is not the most important sacrament in Christianity; however, it is one of the most essential parts. It occurs only once in a person’s lifetime. The purpose of Baptism is to designate the unity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This purpose is to remove Original Sin, everybody is born with this sin because of the defiance of Adam and Eve. There are four predominant reasons as to why Baptism is crucial. These reasons are Christian societies, religious reflection, redemption and development of community, and the main reason is a rite of passage for the individual. Christians’ ethics is based upon baptism and baptismal commitment. Christian’s takes part in two God intended sacraments that celebrate what God has done for us which is communion and baptism. Communion is celebrated on a dependable base and baptism is a one-time declaration of a lifetime of dedication to God. Although baptism is not the most important sacrament in Christianity; however, it is the most necessary foundation of it. Baptism is a religious ceremony that consists of purgative and consecrations. During this rite of passage these children and adults would be accepted by Christ and the church. Christians’ ethics is founded upon both baptism and their commitment towards it. The infant baptismal process is the teaching in faith, pouring of holy water, and contribution in Christian society. While adult baptism contains rite of reception and, rite of selection which is during first Sunday of Lent, and then they are finally initiated during a process called mystagogy. It is derived from the Trinitarian formula which recognized in the bible by Mathew. Baptism is the first step among other sacraments because it welcomes people through Christianity.
