The Face of Elegance: The Life of Audrey Hepburn

A little black dress fitted perfectly around the tiny waist of a dancer’s body. Her hips sway as she walks, hair pinned on top of her head in a perfect bun, and large dark sunglasses resting lightly on the bridge of her nose framing a thin face. Audrey Hepburn. a symbol of elegance, glamour, poise. But no one knows her life, not really. What’s behind that pearly white smile, what have those deep chocolate brown eyes witnessed? Audrey Hepburn has been a cultural symbol for decades. A symbol of success and beauty.Audrey Hepburn is an important and fascinating figure in world history because of the events in her early life, success in her career, and her accomplishments and impact on the world.
Being born into a world of war, sadness hunger, and sorrow doesn’t add up to a very happy childhood. The fourth of May, 1929, near Brussels, Belgium, Edda van Heemstra Hepburn-Ruston is welcomed into the world “Audrey Hepburn - Biography”. Edda, later known as Audrey, was greeted by her happy family of father, J.A Hepburn-Ruston, mother, Ella van Heemstra, “Audrey Hepburn Biography”, and two half brothers Ian and Alexander (Woodward, page 380). At home, Audrey’s early years of life were simple, protected, living alternately between her three family homes in Belgium, Holland, and England (Woodward, page 403). J.A. and Ella’s marriage went south in a few years time, the family suffered financial tensions, and a marriage bound for disaster (Woodward, page 403). The year Edda turned eight years old, her father left the family. She is a role model for anyone suffering through war, divorce, hunger, or depression. She can show these people that there is still hope and they can still live their own dreams.
The tiny dancer in the jet black dress, the one with her hair pinned up and her sunglasses resting on her nose, a cigarette hanging out of her mouth with a trail of smoke out of the end, she wasn’t just a pretty face. Audrey Hepburn was a role model. Audrey Hepburn became an amazing person to look up to because of the events in her early life, success in her career, and her accomplishments and impact on the world. Even after her death she is beloved by so many and will be remembered forever.
