What is your definition of a hero? Is it a glamorous knight in shining armor saving a princess trapped in a castle? Or is it a person who just does the right thing even though nobody is watching? Webster Dictionary definition of a hero is: “a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.” Personally, my definition of a hero is somebody that doesn’t back down to a challenge even though his back is to the wall and the cards are down. In my opinion, a hero has the traits of resilience, selflessness, courage, and optimism.

According to “Webster’s Dictionary Online, selflessness is the concern more with the needs and wishes of others than with one’s own. Throughout the novel” To Kill a Mockingbird “by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch displays selflessness throughout the back in many different situations. The first way Atticus shows selflessness is when he agreed to represent Tom Robinson in a court trial in Maycomb Alabama. Even before Atticus agreed to take the case to defend Tom Robinson, Atticus knew that there was very little chance of success and very little chance of getting paid. Even more important than success or money Atticus knew that by taking this case he could endanger his family. Knowing this Atticus still decided to take the case, and try to help Tom Robinson without hope of a reward or glory. Atticus was willing to risk his reputation and even his life because he wanted equality and change in his community. By taking the Tom Robinson case Atticus displayed Selflessness for his personal and professional career in order to see change. By doing this I think it is most necessary for a hero to have
