When people think about ancient Greece most minds think of the Olympics and Greek mythology. Some may think of the temple architecture and others may think of art. But there is a lot more to ancient Greece than this. Yes these things are very major but there are a lot of things people don’t know about ancient Greece. Have you ever wondered where the original idea for country clubs comes from? It comes from ancient Greece’s gymnasium. Did you ever think about how women were treated or what women did in ancient Greece times? Did you know that women had their own Olympics called the games of Hera? But there are thing we do know about them. Women in ancient Greece really spent their lives following mens orders, trying to make men happy. Men were responsible for women. If women received property her cousin uncle or male relative could force her to divorce her husband. That family member would then be called a kiore. They only time women could meet with each other without their kyrois was at religious feast only for women. Women could not own property. Poor women had more freedom than rich women. With poor women could not afford to have slaves. So the women could get water shop etc by them self’s. Boys were properly educated. Girls were not educated. They were taught how to cook, clean, sew and take care of children from their mother. Wealthy girls had tutors and got an education. Girls in ancient Greece were vied as nothing. In some rooms of housed were reserved for women only. They were usually in the back so men could hide women from guests. They also did not eat with the men. She married Zeus because he raped her and she wanted to hide her shame. Hera is the goddess of marriage, childbirth, gods and empires. She is often called the protector of women. The games of Hera are named after her. Athletes in the games of Hera would pray and offer sacrifices to Hera, before and after the games. Athena is the god of wisdom and reason. She sprung fully grown and armored from Zeus’s head. The city Athens is named after her. Apollo is the god of properly. Apollo is also known as the god of the sun. Apollo was known for his looks and skill for archery. Apollo was a very tough god the gods were frightened from him. But he also had a soft side to him.
