In today’s world, communication between humans needs to be effective and fast. Advancements in technology, such as text messaging and e-mail, have allowed people to communicate in a more effective manner. People can send text messages and e-mail across the country and the world, in some cases, to their friends, colleagues, or co-workers to maintain an adequate line of constant connection. However, these advancements have positive and negative aspects. The positive, as stated above, is that these forms of communication are effective and fast, but the reality is that it could easily go the other way. However, text messaging has advantages that contribute to its overall success, but disadvantages that can result in people staying away from it.
Advantages of Texting As stated above, texting allows for a fast and effective way to communicate among humans without having to be face-to-face. Kelly et al. (2012) state that texting provides advantages such as “convenience, increased control, and reduction of inhibition” (p. 1). It gives control to the person sending the message because they are able to make sure of what they want to say and also decide what they want to talk about with a lot less words needed. For the most part, texting doesn’t involve a lot of words, which can result in some misunderstandings, however, some disagree. Walsh & Brinker (2016) stated that although text messages are shorter than other forms of communication, they did not contain less information. Texting allows people to exchange information using less words than other modes of communication. Although text messages do have advantages, they also have disadvantages.
