Personal Statement

An explorer’s heart lies within me. While many of my fellow classmates sought educational experiences close to home, I have chosen the freedom of exploring the great diversity around the globe. From birth I have been immersed in diversity and had a natural inclination to learn about everything. Born to traditional Indian parent in Australia, I constantly was amazing by the seemingly boundless knowledge in the world. While my friends played sports, I sought a wide range of intellectual pursuits to try to quench my thirst for knowledge.

This led me to travel around the world. With every locale I visit, I enjoy the greatest of happiness, as I look at the wide-ranging diversity of nature and culture they hold. I have been particularly intrigued by how various cultures blend together to create a magical richness in the world. Thought these travels, I have seen how diversity contributes to the success of organizations and turns the most amazing of dreams into realities. …show more content…

Realizing that every city has its own vibrancy, I analyzed my options and chose to live in the one city known throughout the world for bringing together people from every country, New York. Here I attend high school in order to build a strong foundation in all of the core sciences and humanities, in order to ensure that I will not only succeed but also excel within your university. In addition, I bring my broad experiences traveling and living in different countries to my peers through organizing extracurricular activities and bringing up case studies in class.     I grew up in a household where education was seen as a form of self-improvement and empowerment. Being raised in rural Central California by two Filipino immigrants who had nothing more than a high school education, my family did not have an educated or intellectual history I could look up to. That is, until my mother decided to get a college education at the age of 45. I must have been in middle school at the time, before which the word “college” was never really spoken or talked about and I could honestly say I only had a vague idea of what it even was. Rather than having the traditional sit down talk with my parents about higher education, my mom clearly spoke to me through example. I distinctly remember times where I would be her study buddy, and while doing so, I found myself leisurely enjoying the pages of her science textbooks. Instead of asking her questions related to her upcoming text, I inquisitively asked juvenile questions like, “How do the genes make us?” Today I know that this is a very big and complex question that we are still trying to answer. Yet at that moment, I wanted an answer, but mother did not have the solution, nor did the textbook. That was the birth of my pursuit of scientific career.
