Learning a second language takes a lot of effort and time. But once you do, it brings many benefits and opportunities for you. Some researchers have shown that is easier for children to learn a second language (SHERRILL, 2014). However, it does not mean that adults can’t learn it. On the contrary, there are many adults who start learning a new language during adulthood. The first benefit is that you will have better jobs prospective. Companies are looking for qualified employees, and people who can speak another language are one step ahead from those people who can’t speak another language. The third benefit is that you can travel to another country and feel confident to speak to locals without any problems with the language. You have the opportunity to visit to famous places that you always dreamed about. The dream of taking vacation abroad could come true. Another benefit is that as we learn another language we unconsciously learn more about our native language. This happens because when we are learning a second language we have to focus a lot on grammar rules. As a result, we try to link the similarities and the differences between the two languages, and to do that relationship between the languages we need to remember how our native language rules work. It also helps to identify which part of speech some words belong to. Sometimes is hard to say that, but as we learn new words in a second language, we need to make sure what that new word means in our native language. Consequently, we need to really understand when and how we should use that word; it makes us focus on details that we usually didn’t care in our native language.
