Thailand is an interesting country for its history and culture. From the ninth century to the thirteenth century, modern-day Thailand was part of the Khmer empire. In 1238, the Thai overthrew the Khmer empire and established a kingdom at Sukhothai. Buddhism was introduced in the fourteenth century by Thai ruler Ramathibodi. It was established in 1351. It flourished for approximately four hundred years which was actually longer than the Ming Dynasty. The Sukhothai kingdom lasted two hundred years and was succeeded by the kingdom of Ayutthaya. From the sixteenth century to the eighteenth century, the land was traded back and forth between the Thai and the Burmese.
In 1700, Rama I founded Bangkok as the new capital of the Kingdom of Siam, which it had come to be known as. The kingdom avoided European colonialism. They managed to remain independent throughout the nineteenth and twentieth century’s. In 1932, the kingdom of Siam changed its name to the kingdom of Thai, thus, bringing greater recognition to the Thai. In the same year, Thailand also established a constitutional monarchy. Thailand remained primarily unaffected by any outside forces until World War II, where Thailand was obtained by Japan. The Thai later sided with the United States after the war though. Thailand has managed to keep the same ruler since 1946. That ruler is Rama IX, who is currently the longest active ruler of the kingdom of Thai.
Rama IX has few political responsibilities since Thailand has a constitutional monarchy. Yingluck Shinawatra is the current prime minister and serves as head of the government. The lowest twenty percent of the population only controls just one percent of the nation’s wealth. The bottom twenty’s average income per month consists of just approximately 1,440 baht, which is equivalent to about forty-five U.S. dollars. Labor jobs are very low in payment generally. That is why you see Japanese car-producing companies transferring manufacturing operations to Thailand. That allows their profits to increase exponentially, that is because wages for jobs of labor are very poor in Thailand. All of this has led to rioting by the lower class. Riots have taken place outside of government buildings; these riots have led to harsh responses by the military. Just in 2014, twenty citizens and 5 military men have died in riots.
