One of the best qualities of society is one known as honor. However, honor is one of these words which cannot be tied down with an exact definition. People define honor with different ideas or opinions: being honorable is being respected, and to be honored you must be admired; you must have high morals to be considered honorable. Some say that your honor is determined not by yourself, but by everyone else. The definition of honor seems to have always been this confusing. However, it is noticeable that honor’s definition has changed over time, and it can be compared likewise. As he won the Sylvanus Thayer Award, General MacArthur, gave a speech titled Duty, Honor, Country in which he said, “Duty, honor, country: Those three hallowed words reverently dictate what you ought to be, what you can be, what you will be. They are your rallying point to build courage when courage seems to fail, to regain faith when there seems to be little cause for faith, to create hope when hope becomes forlorn”. (MacArthur). To summarize, General MacArthur said that your honor determines the person that you are; that your honor is what will keep you fighting when nothing else can. In May of 1962, General Douglas MacArthur gave his gratitude to the United States Military Academy at West Point for his military service and for his acceptance of the Thayer Award. The speech was a key time for MacArthur to leave his legacy. With his speech “Duty, Honor, Country,” MacArthur shared his beliefs that one should follow the the words duty, honor, and country, because they helped him succeed throughout life and his military life. MacArthur thought that if the cadets heard of how he became successful, they would follow after him. On May 12th, he was successful in doing so as his speech consisted of rhetorical appeals which showed the importance of the three words he followed during his life.

William Shakespeare’s Henry IV is a one of his many plays that deal with the varying ideas of honor, as well as issues of courage, loyalty, and ambition, interposing examples of dishonor, weakness, and the deceitful plots among both the drunkards and noblemen. Shakespeare utilizes suggestive metaphors to create illusions, imagery, and to reinforce the different views of the major issues people were faced with in his time and in ours. His plays often focus on the imagery, either on some obvious important symbol, or some image pattern that recurs throughout the work. Readers are then pushed and pulled through different conceptions and actions of the word, so much so, it gets to the point where it becomes clear that one of the key motifs of the play is an ironic exploration of what that word really means. Falstaff begs explanation, “What is honor? A word. What is in that word “honor”?”, just as the readers do during the course of the play (5.1.133-134).

There are few people in the world with this much honor and good moral. Honor is shown when people act with integrity, taking matters into their own hands to make a good change in the world. Culture affects honor because it causes people to see the world through different aspects (views) , but people still stand up for what they believe in, whether it is on their lifestyle, education, or religion.
