Ellis Island, what was once one of the world’s most important gateways to America, remains a visiting site. Ellis Island has many long but interesting histories. Located in the bay near New York City, it was the gateway to millions of immigrants from all over the world. One of the first things that you would witness as you pass through the gateway to a better life is the statue of liberty, standing strong and proud. As said before, it was also a huge risk to take. That was mainly because if you were a poor immigrant, you would have to ride in steerage level and trust me, that’s no fun. Once you’ve arrived, you would be forced/expected to take a series of test or examination. If you failed the test, bad things happen such as you going to quarantine, which means that you will get locked up for a while. or potentially even sent all the way back in those terrible conditions in the boat. If you were to succeed, then you would enter America as a new citizen. Back when Ellis Island wasn’t shut down, there were immigrants coming from all over the world. Let’s start off with the doctor. The doctors were the ones that check you to see if you have any diseases or anything like that and were to do even further searches once they spotted a sign of a disease. They also worked at the hospital (which was the medical service) to cure anything and to their best to things that can be cured. The interpreters were the like the 1800’s version of google translate. They translated for the immigrants who didn’t speak English. They needed to possess the skill of knowing many other languages and the different versions and the ways to say them. Even they themselves had to take an exam before earning the role of an interpreter. Next is the inspectors who were the ones that sat on the really high tables and asked you questions. They check to see if you obtain mental problems or if you are worthy of entering America. Nurses were another job on Ellis Island. Nurses were like the doctor’s helpers. They could only work under supervision and were expected to live at Ellis Island. During their breaks, they were allowed to free roam around New Jersey or New York. Immigrant aid workers were the people that, well, aided the immigrants. According to National Park Service, some of the aid workers were permanent representatives.
