Understanding and Managing Martin's Anger: A Case Study

My client which I will refer to as Martin, is a 12 year old Hispanic male that was referred by his mother for have problems controlling his anger, poor self-esteem, and poor social skills. The client when I did his assessment was very timid and shy with myself. The answers I was getting from him were very short and straight to the point. I had little knowledge of this age group but I did know a little about him before he came in from the conversation I had with his mother. Growing up his biological father verbally, mentally, and physically abused him. His step-father after his mother remarried, was also abusive during that married. Now the most current step-father is the opposite of them, that he is loving and caring towards Martin. He is an adolescent and in Erik Erikson’s model he is in the identity vs role confusion for the basic conflict. Going in more with the important events in this life stage it is the social relationship concept. During this time he needs to develop a concept of who he is and start to define himself in society. If he is able to master this stage he will be able to find who he truly is but if he does not he will have a weak sense of how he sees himself. According to Christiansen (1998), it is important for relationships to be in place in order to support each developmental stage in each developmental crisis (p. 3). I can assume that my client was not able to development and be supported like a typical child in the earlier stages before his current stage. I can agree that if he was able to development and be nurtured following the psychosocial theory that he would be a typical adolescent. That is why right now his problems with his education and antisocial behavior was there way before his mother started to notice them in the past
