The Revolutionary Era was an era where the Revolutionary war more commonly known as the American Revolution took place. The American Revolution, which involved Americans fighting against the British, was one of the most significant events that happened in the 18th-century. This war was a major turning point for the Americans because it was the first time that the “new world” successfully declared and attained independence from Great Britain. This new independence allowed for the “new world” and “old world” to be completely distinct and different from each other. The meaning of revolutionary is “constituting or bringing about a major or fundamental change” (Merriam-Webster's dictionary, 2018). During those times, the word equality was exclusively used when referring to white men. When it came to African Americans, women and Native Americans, equality was nonexistent. For African Americans, the North wanted to abolish slavery; however, the Southern states had no plan to give up slaves. So, the Southern states, mostly Virginia, joined the fight against Great Britain, causing the Revolution to become “primarily a war to defend slavery” (Tindall and Shi, 177). As for the women, life was not great either. During this Era, the men owned the women and treated them “like children, limiting their roles to child-rearing and maintaining the household” (Tindall and Shi, 177). Women could not work, vote or even get an education. During the war woman gained a little more freedom, but that eventually ended and they went back to their unequal lives. Lastly for Native Americans, they thought their land and rights were protected since they served in the war, but that did not stop the Americans from destroying everything they had and putting them into reservations. These horrible acts did not cause the Revolutionary Era to have a positive major change in society, but instead made it take a huge jump back into their old
