Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a world where everyone was forced to be exactly alike? Well in Ayn Rand’s novel Anthem she directly confronts this topic through the main character named Equality 7-2521. Equality 7-2521 faces challenges directly relating to the issue that the government has been trying to address for many years. Equality 7-2521 is not like his brothers, he is smarter, wiser and even taller, therefore, his brothers think that he has “evil in his bones” (Rand 18). At the start of Anthem, Equality is a collectivist who knows there is something wrong with the world he lives in. This allows him to evolve into an individualist. Equality says , “It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see. It is base and evil. It is as if we were speaking alone to no ears but our own” (Rand 17). Equality admits he has committed a transgression and hopes to be forgiven. Equality, at this moment, is living to the standards of others because he lives in a society where no man is to think differently than another. This contradicts Rand’s philosophy because she says that a man is entitled to his own happiness and that you are in charge of it, but since Equality is living to the rules of his society, he cannot find his own happiness, for he is almost forbidden to do so. Likewise, it states in the text, “I owe nothing to my brothers, nor do I gather debts from them. I ask none to live for me, nor do I live for any others. I covet no man’s soul, nor is my soul theirs to covet” (Rand 96). Equality realizes that he is not to live nor commit himself to the standards of others. When they turn 40 they go to reside in the Home of the Useless. In Chapter One of this book, Equality 7-2521 says that it is unusual for men to reach the age of 45. Growing up in a strict society with many rules, you realize how life should not be. For being your own individual is not a sin, but a benefit. Being your own individual is not only good for yourself, it is good for all of society. Being different benefits you and everyone around you in ways you may not even realize it. In the book Anthem, by Ayn Rand, society is nothing how it should be. The government not only controls what you do for a living, but it also controls how you speak, where you live, who you talk to, where to be and what to learn. The government does not turn Russia into a individualism country, but it turns it into a communist country. The people are to repeat “We are one in all and all in one. The rules are meant to suffocate and control the people. They live in fear of what may happen if they break a rule. The rules destroy who they truly are. The leaders have the rules in place for the sole purpose of controlling them. They fear what will happen if people become enlightened. Equality knows the dangers of breaking the rules. His fear shows that on a subconscious level they all may know the true purpose of the rules. This is demonstrated when he says, “And we know well that there is no transgression blacker than to do or think alone. We have broken the laws. The laws say that men may not write unless the Council of Vocation bid them so. May we be forgiven!” (1) This excerpt shows that Equality is aware of the consequences of his actions. He also sounds fearful, which shows that he is somewhat aware of the purpose of the laws and rules. Nevertheless, he nor anyone else in the society may be able to put together the truth, but it is evident that they have acknowledged the ever present fear. Equality rises above that fear and manages to escape the choke hold that they have put him in. He decides to create a society that is better than the current one he is forced to live
The things that make one different are the things that cause the world to change and lead to conformity. Uniqueness is a characteristic that is in everyone; no one person is the same. In this way, Equality 7-2521 from Anthem, a novel written by Ayn Rand, conforms to society on his outward actions to keep him safe, but on this inside, his drive for individuality and not being “normal” allows him to discover a tunnel in which he discovers multiple things like electricity. In a similar aspect, I seek to with my mind, as if a moving vehicle, swerve sharply to the opposite direction to avoid indifference and achieve my maximum potential.
