Overview: The environment is rapidly undergoing major transformations because of anthropogenic causes which has not only impacted us humans but also other species on this planet negatively. The changing lifestyles and consumption pattern of human beings especially after the industrial revolution has put tremendous pressure on our ecosystems which in many cases are suffering tremendous loss and degradation. Climate change is now a reality which we human beings can ignore only at our own expense. The threat is looming ahead and if we do not actions in a timely manner it would not only have an impact on the current generation but also on the future generations to come. “Climate change refers to statistically significant variation in either the mean state of the climate or in its variability, which is attributed directly or indirectly to anthropogenic activities that alter the composition of global atmosphere and which are in addition to natural climatic variability observed over comparable time periods”. Global warming which is sometimes used synonymously with climate change is actually a subset of climate change. Global warming is the gradual increase in the earth’s surface temperature due to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere which as a result of human activities have increasedin amount and thereby resulting in an increase in the amount of heat trapped by these gases. India’s astounding growth record has been marred by a degrading environment and increasing scarcity of natural resources. Following the size and diversity of its economy, environmental risks are immense and are caused by both poverty and prosperity. Environmental sustainability could become the major challenge as India moves ahead on its growth trajectory. Climate change has also affected the livelihood of the people making them more vulnerable to the adversities of nature. The asset base of the people has grown weak in recent times. The government of the state and other non-governmental organizations have been working tirelessly to reduce the vulnerability of the common man by undertaking adaptive measures to strengthen the asset base of the common man and making him capable of withstanding the vagaries of nature. However a lot more efforts need to be put not only by the government, but by all the concerned stakeholders in order to easily adopt to these climate changes.
