English Composition 2 has been an engaging and interesting class. As an online course, though it was void of face-to-face interaction, it was engaging and consisted of many opportunities to interact. I felt challenged in a subject that I have previously felt confident in. Though I lacked experience in MLA format, I initially felt secure and very prepared to do exceedingly well. I quickly learned that I had significant deficits in my writing abilities. I developed new writing skills including a better understanding of the MLA format, to pay close attention to the format or instructions of the essay, and how to analyze different kinds of writings. When participating in the first reader response paper, I spent a lot of time writing, citing, and organizing my thoughts. I knew I would struggle with citation but tried my best to follow the guidelines. When I received the paperback it was confirmed that my citation needed work. …show more content…
It is important to read and understand an assignment or the kind of writing that you are trying to create. During the writing of the “Argument Essay,” I failed to take time to read all of the assigned reading and simply began researching and writing the essay. Unfortunately, by beginning this way, I found myself overloaded with information about ADHD and had a difficult time narrowing my research. I began compiling the information in an essay that resulted in something that resembled more of a “Research Essay.” I focused on trying to properly cite information and failed to fully read the instructions. This resulted in a poorly written argument that was void of my own voice and used excessive citations. It was more poorly organized and lacked quality. Thus, the result was a grade of 68% with many notes in reference to lack of voice and over citation of
When going through life learning is an everyday occurrence as each day is constantly filled with information that is used throughout the course of your life. Each day we get stronger and stronger in whatever we decide to put our minds to, weather that be academics, sports, our jobs we are constantly learning and growing on a daily basis. This semester I have grown in English as I personally felt that through the English 102 course I have been able to grasp some key concepts and writing techniques that will better me for the future. In this class there was a list of goals and outcomes that the instructor felt would be achievable and the best way to learn throughout the course. In each goal throughout this process I feel like I have improved to some degree but there is other things that I do need to touch up on a bit more to further my writing education outside the classroom.
In this essay I chose to write about how issues like mental health effect veterans as a community. I discussed major issues like homelessness, suicide, unemployment, and disability and how they affect the mental health of veterans. This was the first essay where we had to focus on citations. I had a hard time figuring out at first, but by the end I feel I had a good handle on them. With this essay I focused more on improving the issues that I had issues with on the first essay. That tactic was successful, I ended up with a 142/150. Which is a huge improvement, having the ability to know exactly what your issue is when it comes to writing makes it very easy to fix that
Previous to this course, I had never been exposed to rhetoric, nor did I understand rhetoric and its influence the first time it was introduced to me. In addition to having limited exposure to rhetoric, this was my first real writing assignment for an AP course. The process I used to complete this essay is far different from the process I’ve developed throughout this school year. I allowed my anxiety to override my brain, resulting in me stressing myself throughout the whole writing process. Rather than accepting that I am good enough for an AP course, I doubted my writing skills and drove myself crazy by second-guessing every word and phrase I typed. I relentlessly researched rhetoric, vocabulary, and other writing knowledge, which would be beneficial for the future, but I let all of the writing skills I had not yet acquired prevent me from using the skills I did have to write a great essay. Now, I type everything I have to say about the essay topic and then review my work only fixing what needs to be fixed. At this point in time I had difficulty quoting text; I had to learn how to stop drop quoting and when to use brackets, commas, and ellipses. Looking back on this essay, I wish I had taken notes on the text, as it would have made analyzing structure far easier. I also wish I had asked for help when I felt unsure about rhetoric rather than trying to find answers
When it came time to meet with Dr. Amy Pardo for an individual meeting, we sat and mapped out the plan for the semester in English Composition II. Before enrolling into English Composition II, it was scared because it might have ended up being like English Composition I where the professor expressed that I did not write very well. After writing a paper for Dr. Pardo and receiving her critique back on it, she said the writing skills were excellent, but work needs to be done to a few things. During the individual meeting, we figured out work need to be done as far as grammar, punctuation, and structure, but the critical thinking and sentence formation are excellent. By evaluating the summary, rhetorical analysis, critique, and research paper, the strengths and weaknesses vary throughout all of the essays.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. Throughout the English 101 course I have been able to improve as a writer by composing essays
English Composition II has unexpectedly improved my writing into an academic level. As I studied various English reading and writing courses, this class “English Composition II” did not immediately caught my eye. However as I researched about the concepts of this class, the decision to make was not so difficult since I was lacking in critical thinking and the interpretation of works. Also as a Business Major, it made sense that the subject of English would be of interest to me and as a career requirement. During the first weeks, I thought that I would be fully prepared for this course after taking an accelerated course in English during the spring semester. However, after attending class for about a month, I certainly did not expect to learn an entirely new process of writing
Composition 1 taught me crucial writing skills and helped me grow as a writer. At the beginning of the semester, my papers utilized a considerable amount of passive voice, lacked transitional phrases, and the context was not always fully developed. But throughout the class, my writing became more clear, organized, and comprehensive. Passive voice allows the object of an action to be the subject of a sentence. In my first paper, the formal summary essay, I wrote, “The term describes situations, dating back to the 1980s, when excessive numbers of blacks were found to have been exposed to highly polluted areas.” The use of “were found” and “been exposed” distort the meaning of the sentence. Passive voice confuses the reader and makes comprehension
My English Composition Study In my freshman year, ENG class was always an important class. As we all know, when you are learning a foreign language, the most difficult thing is to write a paper with this language. Our school is an American style school, so we need to use English whenever we write papers. However, it is a little difficult for beginners to learn the pattern of American essays and to form our own papers.
From early on, I knew English would be my kryptonite. I was never interested in the subject and the books assigned along with the endless research papers made me resent the “boring” subject even more. It seemed as though many of my teachers in the past did not care for our feelings towards the material we covered or how we grew as readers and writers. We had no say in what we wanted to do or what we wanted to get out of the class. I understand that we had standards and certain things we needed to cover by the end of the year, but it would have been helpful if the teachers cared about what we wanted to learn, not only about reading and writing, but about ourselves as well. With that being said, I can now say reading and writing is a big part
When I first stepped foot into your classroom, I was overwhelmed with anxiety; lacking the imperative writing skills, thinking skills and problem solving skills for an undergrad; having graduated from a school that cared little for their students academics. I vaguely knew of MLA formatting, appropriate punctuation, developing thesis statements and conveying personal opinions in both informal and formal essays. However, through the duration of this course, I noticed that my writing was improving. By completing the in class writings, reading responses, discussion notes and mandatory formal papers; these writings helped me to become a better scholar. I soon knew of the appropriate ways to cite sources, incorporate rhetorical questions into personal
English Composition 1 with Lab has been helpful to me, and I have learned to think more about my writings. With the six objectives in mind, I have successfully achieve them; although, there are areas to be improved.
Before taking Composition I, I thought of myself as a very strong writer. Throughout all of my high school courses I always excelled at any writing assignment that I was given. I was a master of the five-paragraph essay and MLA format and did not think there was anything else I needed to learn, but I was blatantly wrong. Going into the first day of Composition I, I was nervous because I had heard that it was a time consuming class, but I was still confident in my own abilities. English had never been my best or favorite subject, but I always scored high on my essays even though I was missing large portions of how to effectively write an essay. I really struggled with elaborating all of my points and articulating what I was trying to say without
I have never been good at english and I have always needed help, particularly with some essays. Depending on what that topic is, I could do a good job but more often I need my essays to be looked over. This quarter, I have been having many assignments in my english class that are in fact essays. I was unsure about an essay that was assigned about two weeks ago, so after I had written my rough draft, I went to visit my English teacher during her office hours. The fact that my teacher is so nice and friendly also made it easier for me to actually attend here office hours and ask her questions about my essay. I specifically asked her questions about my introduction and conclusion, since those are the main parts of my essay that I was iffy about.
This semester I learned many new things in my English 1301 class. I took this class last year but I had to drop it because I didn’t have a professor explaining the work to me. And I really didn’t understand what I was doing. At first, I was scared to take this class. During my high school years I wasn’t that good of a writer. I thought this composition class was going to be hard since I sometimes thought it was hard in high school. My writing experience was good and sometimes bad. This semester in the composition class I had many writing strengths and weaknesses. These strengths and weaknesses is what helped me learn the errors I was making while writing essays this semester.
After I graduated high school I thought my writing was good enough until I took an English class this semester. I was quite surprised at how much my writing was lacking in sentence structure, use of citation, and some general grammar. In the past I was able to get decent grades on my writing assignments, but I guess that was because I was in high school and the standards weren’t that high. I didn’t put much effort in my past writing, my arguments weren’t fully expressed and I lacked a lot of technical writing skills like how to use citations and organize my supporting details. Over the semester I have learned how to properly use citations, make a compelling arguments, and use the writing process to write great essays. Now that it’s the end
