There are several issues that were both discussed in the book End This Depression Now by Paul Krugman and Changing Contours of Work: Jobs and opportunities in the New Economy by Stephen Sweet and Peter Meiksins. The textbook offered a sociological analysis of the nature of work in the new economy, such as the new opportunities in this economy as well and the challenges many workers now face and ultimately how this change the family lives of many. The book also discussed about the new face of the workplace and work in general, which includes issues on inequality and discrimination. The book discussed job security, policies and why workers work more now than they did before or work in 24/7 economy. Lastly, the book talks about the ways on how to face all the challenges in this new economy and work environment.
As such, the textbook is more focused on “work” in general. The book by Krugman on the other hand is more encompassing or comprehensive. Basically, the theme of the two books is the same. The economy today has changed the way people live and work. In Krugman’s book, he discussed about the problems that we are facing now, including unemployment and its consequences. Similar with the textbook, he discussed on the changing face of work, workplace and workforce. The lack of demand, as discussed in the textbook is similar in the book in the way it has changed the way workers work, get compensated and how they live.
On the other hand, the book by Krugman, again, is more comprehensive. The on-going job crisis for example, is discussed in different level. For one, the newly graduates who are just now entering the workforce are affected by lack of good job opportunities. Ultimately, this will affect their careers for years to come...

It is therefore necessary to look not just on the economy model but also on the way things are governed. Politics play an important role in the economic depression and it will also play an important role in the economic growth. Any long term growth will be dependent on the how the country is managed not just economically but also politically. It should be important to note that corruption in government is never good to the economy. In fact, history shows that corruption causes the economy to fall into crisis. Two things are needed to solve the problem of the economy, the right stimulation, as offered by the author, and the right policies and clean politics in Washington. With these, the country will be able to escape the depression that it is now in.
People push being happy on society as a total must in life; sadness is not an option. However, the research that has conducted to the study of happiness speaks otherwise. In this essay Sharon Begley's article "Happiness: Enough Already" critiques and analyzes societies need to be happy and the motivational affects it has on life. Begley believes that individuals do not always have to be happy, and being sad is okay and even good for us. She brings in the research of other professionals to build her claim that extreme constant happiness is not good for people. I strongly agree that we need to experience sadness to build motivation in life and character all around.
John Dower's "Embracing Defeat" truly conveys the Japanese experience of American occupation from within by focusing on the social, cultural, and philosophical aspects of a country devastated by World War II. His capturing of the Japanese peoples' voice let us, as readers, empathize with those who had to start over in a "new nation."
Mary, Toby, and their family were forced to move numerous times throughout the novel, Mary Coin, constantly migrating to look for jobs across the state of California and the like. If a job did not pay well the family would load their belongings in the Hudson and drive off to another workplace with no questions asked. This happened very often because their services for them were no longer needed and they were forced to be laid off. The time period was the Great Depression, where the economy was in its biggest slump ever, leading to many Americans looking for work and overall being dirt poor. Nothing could pose a greater contrast when presented in juxtaposition with Rand’s doctrine than the Communism of her childhood. In conclusion, during the great recession a wave of great depression was caused and a huge factor of that depression is unemployment and job dissatisfaction, reading those two articles it helps in appreciating any job you get, showing that taking pride and working hard in a job will keep you satisfied. I never knew that people would get proud working in jobs like a maid and it is fascinating the level and extent of dedication they have toward their jobs.
