The Empire State Building is a very tall building at over 1,000 feet tall. It was designed by William F. Lamb. Its construction started on March 17,1930, and ended on April 31, 1931. It was opened on May 1, 1931, a day after it was finished. It is located on Fifth Ave. Manhattan, New York. The structure is nowadays used as a tower block and an office.
The Empire State Building has a unique style that is modern, yet contemporary. It has undergone recent renovations and has had many in the past years. It was designed in the Art Deco period and its total height is 1,454 feet tall. Some of the architectural elements used are obvious, and some are not as obvious. Who can forget Hong Kong in “An Affair to Remember”? It is one of the tallest buildings in America. The building was also finished earlier than expected.
Some significant world events that transpired while the Empire State Building was being constructed were the Great Depression and when the song “The Star-Spangled Banner” was made the national anthem. These world events and other world events at the time didn’t really affect the progress and constuction of the building. In fact, it was, as I said, finished earlier than expected.
The purpose of building the Empire State Building was the “Skyscraper race”. The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 in Paris. The building taunted and teased architects in America to do better, as if it were saying, “Look at me I’m so big and tall! I’m unlike any other building!”. Then, many people started to dream bigger and bigger and bigger!
John Jakob Raskob, a former vice president of General Motors, joined the race. He was trying to beat Walter Chrysler, founder of Chrysler Corporation. He hired Lamb, Shreve, and Hamon to be his architects. It is supposedly said that Raskob took a pencil, handed it to Lamb and said, “Bill, how high can you make it so that it won't fall
