Although Samuels death could have been anyone’s fault, there are more reasons why the man that pulled the emergency brake cord should be held responsible. There was not a real emergency going on at the time for the emergency brake to be pulled. Bullying could be a reason for Samuels death, even though there are different points of view on the subject. as well as bullying, race could have had something to do with the fact that the man randomly pulled that emergency cord. Although most trains are different, the one thing most trains have in common are the emergency brake cord. As stated in Reddy’s article “Most people in the United States live highly segregated lives, with neighborhoods, schools, and churches seldom fully integrated.” (Reddy). Back in the 1970’s when Grace Paley’s story took place, the world was still a little segregated. In the story the four boys, three Negros and one unknown race, where beginning to laugh at the lady that told them to get in the other cart and sit down and behave, and that may have made the man mad that the non-white boys were not doing as the lady told them to, which intentionally made him pull the emergency brake cord. Although there are many reasons for Samuels death, racism could be a bigger influence on it than any other. On more occasions than one the man should have been held responsible for Samuels death. If there was not a real emergency going on, why did the man pull the emergency brake cord. Even if the man thought that Samuel might have been bullying the other boys, that might have just been how the boys played with each other. Given the time-period the fact that Samuel was not white could have been the cause of his death just like many other occasions. There could be many reasons that caused Samuels death but there is no certainty about who should be held
