On December 2, 1823, President James Monroe used his annual message to Congress to state a very bold and powerful message, “The American continents … are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers” (Monroe, James). The Monroe doctrine was a massive event in United States society. Occurring in 1823, president James Monroe wrote his annual message to congress. This message contained the doctrine, which warned European powers not to interfere in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. This was obviously a very aggressive document.
