Does the prison system effectively rehabilitate prisoners to be released to society? Initially, my research question was “does the prison system effectively rehabilitate prisoners to be released, and after being released what gender is less likely to go back to prison”. The initial research question was too broad and required two separate questions to be answered. The first question to be answered is “does the prison system effectively rehabilitate prisoners”, secondly, finding out which gender (male or female) is less likely to go back to prison. The revision allowed adequate time to find information for my topic, and once the research question was narrow down it became easier to search for information. The first article found was by Pizzi, which states the United States has the highest incarceration rate, and incarceration may increase crime. This article is interesting, not because it speaks of the United States having the highest incarceration rate; however, it mentions that incarceration “may” increase crime. While going into the next article I considered government funded programs to help released prisoners to become successful when release and Second Chance Programs came up. The article about Crime Rate appeared, which states crime was down by four percent, violent crime fell five percent, property crime fell four percent, and these numbers are drastically lowering through the years. This article showed the success rate of released prisoners entering society. In the article suggested by Cholbi, people rational committing crimes based on the choice theory- being caught versus the benefits of successfully committing a crime.
