Introduction
In the age of technology and the notion that information has to be obtained at a lightening speed, libraries have come to the realization that they need to apply social media applications to enhance to overall experience for the community in the public library sector. Gone are the days of the librarian hiding behind the service desk or shuffling around with a book cart. To get funding, the public involved and perhaps a new sustaining donor, librarians are now tasked with developing, creating and monitoring various forms of social media. These outlets could be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or Pinterest. Anyone can create one of these accounts but it takes planning, performance, and consistent monitoring to effectively utilize these methods in an appropriate and well thought out manner.
A study conducted in 2010 by the Pew Research Center concluded that over 85% of adults owned a cellphone and that desktop computers were most popular in the age ranges between 35-65 Abram, S. (2014). This is significant because libraries need to develop exciting and innovative strategies to gain patrons of all ages to use their social media outlets. A trend, I have observed over the past few months in my area of residence were the library hours getting cut and closed on Sundays. Due to this, my local branch designed an interactive menu for the patrons, which included “Ask the Librarian”. This tab can be utilized both during open and closed business hours with a 24 response time. I found this both exciting and forward thinking on the part of the library. A “tethered generation” is the description that is undeniably associated with Millennials because of their technological dependence. It is difficult to define an entire group of people without considering the factors that contribute to our behaviors and lifestyle as a generation. In Kathryn Tyler’s similarly titled article “The Tethered Generation”, she explains that technology supports the existence of millennials, “To prepare for millennials, it’s important to understand how cell phones and computers have changed their brain development, the enormous role their parents play in their lives well into adulthood, and what policies and training programs” (Tyler, “The Tethered Generation”). Millennials’ minds and habits formed around technology. They learned to problem solve by consulting the Internet to find answers to questions at a rapid pace or easily can contact a friend or family member on their smartphones for advice.
Social media is a key tool that has changed both our everyday lives and the way we do business. In the modern world, almost everyone who has a smart phone – and most of those who have computers - also hold accounts on a social media company. Currently, In N Out Burger and Shake Shack, two of America’s most buzz-worthy restaurants, are exhibiting great success at using the social media world to promote their businesses. Both companies have established a presence on many of the most popular social media outlets, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Each of these burger-focused restaurants, however, has demonstrated a very different approach to their social media.
Mohammed Ali Syed Ms. Jessica Madinger October 21, 2016 English 102 Extended Summary “The Tethered Generation” by Kathryn Taylor Kathryn Tyler in her article ‘The Tethered Generation’ she claims that though technology has enabled the dependency of children, it has further abetted parental oversight, and it easier for those parents who are overbearing to ‘hover’ well into adulthood” ( Tyler, 470). She is refereeing to one of the many reasons as to why the millennial generation is taking much longer time to reach adulthood. The author claims that technology has enabled parents and modern generations the cell phones a device with which parents, and their children can stay together wherever they go.
Twenge’s article brings several issues to our attention. Doctor Twenge refers to the impacted generation as “iGen” because “members of this generation are growing up with smartphones and do not remember a time before the internet”(page 59). Twenge often refers to an interview she held with a thirteen-year-old girl named Athena. Athena’s interview provides an iGen teenager’s perspective on cell phone usage. Twenge’s research shows that iGen is known to be the least social generation; her statistics show that people have stopped hanging out with their friends and even going out on dates.
For a long time the ways that non-profit organizations raise money was the same. They used solicitation letters as a way to reach out and engage new audiences to financially support their organizations. Then with the rise of the internet, they were able to use mass emails. Now there is an even newer form of technology that allows organizations to fundraise and gain new audiences. This new medium is social media. Stone brings up some good points about using social media to fundraise. He quotes Stannard-Stockton, chief executive of Tactical Philanthropy Advisors, as saying, “It’s pretty well documented that social media is by no means an easy way to raise money, but it is a rather fantastic way to build a network of supporters.” Using a few other articles this paper will explore how nonprofits need to properly use social media and how it can help their organizations in return.

Exposing students to the power of social media in the classroom is an important part of preparing them to be active and positive digital citizens in a 21st century world. In the last two years, my own students have rapidly been drawn to Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and many other social networking platforms. They upload, share, and connect with others often without any regard to how their digital footprints may reflect them as individuals. Having continuous conversations with students about the choices that they make can lead to positive results. Students don't realize how powerful social media platforms can be in terms of networking, researching, and engaging in academic conversations. It makes me laugh every time I hear them whisper about my colleague Heather's or my Twitter feed. First of all kids, I can hear you. Second of all, yes, social media can be an amazing way to give and exchanged knowledge.
Customers involved in social media can access their site almost anywhere. Most people have cell phones, computers, or tablets that they take anywhere they go. In the article Social Media and Interpersonal Communication, people today would rather e-mail that meet and would rather text than talk on the phone (2013) The article continues to discuss how social media effects our ability to communicate. People have their heads in their phones. They aren’t reading the daily newspaper like they used to. Businesses can and do take advantage of this. Just like waking up in the morning and inhaling my first conscious-breath of the day, reading is something essential to me. As I child, I used to dream of having my own and private reading place where I would sit and spend my whole day reading my favorite books without any disturbance. Thanks to my dreams, I now have a wonderful private library in my house. This place is not similar to any other ordinary library but a mini place where you can find a massive number of interesting books of different varieties.
Social media is quickly evolving in front of our eyes, and it is almost impossible to reject and hide from this new form of media. Not only is it an important part of socialization within peer groups, but now it is used to market and motivate people to become a part of a larger community. It is undeniably changing the way one communicates and how one finds and shares information. Most websites offer communication through the use of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and many other blog formats. With new apps on smartphones and photography and video made digital, media can be created, edited and shared quickly and once it is in this new digital cloud it is not yours anymore.
As the largest generation on the planet (Jenkins), the Millennials (otherwise known as generation Y) have faced plenty of scrutiny from the previous generations. A Millennial is the demographic group made up of anyone who was born between the years 1980 and 2000. This group of young people has proved to be a great contribution to society and also to the advancement of technology. They do things in their own ways and on their own terms, always approaching a problem in the most efficient way possible for everyone. Millennials have settled numerous issues in our society and they are expected to change our world exponentially. Millennials adapt to new technologies very quickly, however, while Millennials see themselves in generally positive terms such as ‘tech-savvy’ and ‘up to date’, many people from the older generations see them as ‘spoiled’ and ‘lazy’. The new technologies do make living everyday life easier and more functional, however, Millennials are not at all ‘lazy’ for taking advantage of them. Millennials use these new tools in incredibly innovative ways and they see the world in a completely different light.
Social media is becoming more and more popular day by day. It has become a part of our lives.
