Effective Natural Resource Management

Effective natural resource management has increasingly become important as human interaction and destruction of resource use rises. I will examine two types of natural resource models currently used in today’s world. The two types of systems are International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) and integrated adaptive management (IAM). After a comparing and contrasting the two resource models, I will provide a real world example that can use the two management systems. Finally, a third natural resource application spatial system dynamics (SSD) will be briefly discussed to see if improvements can be made to enhance EMS or IAM.

The environmental management system generally concentrates on environmental management practices, rather than management action (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2011, March). The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is the leading worldwide organization on standardizing businesses and government agencies (International Organization for Standardization, 2011). The ISO is a structured support system allowing efficient and consistent results to environmental issues. One important element to the EMS plan operated by ISO is that it provides flexibility to any application. Many essential elements from the ISO system are similar to any normal business operation with added emphasis on environmental policies and sustainability (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2011, March).
