Effective natural resource management has increasingly become important as human interaction and destruction of resource use rises. I will examine two types of natural resource models currently used in today’s world. The two types of systems are International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) and integrated adaptive management (IAM). After a comparing and contrasting the two resource models, I will provide a real world example that can use the two management systems. Finally, a third natural resource application spatial system dynamics (SSD) will be briefly discussed to see if improvements can be made to enhance EMS or IAM.
The environmental management system generally concentrates on environmental management practices, rather than management action (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2011, March). The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is the leading worldwide organization on standardizing businesses and government agencies (International Organization for Standardization, 2011). The ISO is a structured support system allowing efficient and consistent results to environmental issues. One important element to the EMS plan operated by ISO is that it provides flexibility to any application. Many essential elements from the ISO system are similar to any normal business operation with added emphasis on environmental policies and sustainability (United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2011, March).

Halpern and his team suggest that an EBM approach may be the best solution for addressing these issues. Chuenpagdee’s research also highlights the challenges and issues surrounding the implementation of effective MPAs. The study included an in-depth look into four case studies that focused on the design stages of MPAs, and the social issues that must be taken into consideration, and how the incorporation of local communities into management efforts could lead to increases in MPA network success and sustainability. The compilation of data presented in these studies, all highlight the fact that nations are increasing the number of MPAs, in order to reach international goals of conservation, however even if the global area goals of protection are met, it is clear that the success of these protected areas will be heavily dependent upon the socioeconomic issues surrounding the impacted areas, as well as the larger-scale issues that need to be simultaneously addressed such as pollution and climate change, both of which can not be resolved by the implementation of protected zones.... ...
The ISO aims to align the plethora of different standards into one quality system that can handle many standards. In order to align the standards, ISO has to first move the standards towards more competence, consistency, and impartiality so that businesses who follow them can practice the three tenants more openly in their process (Diesing). The revisions that have been completed on the various ISO standards, specifically ISO 9000 and 9001, have allowed companies in any industry to easily adopt them, making them prime models for future revisions to other ISO standards and indicators of how these standards will change over time. These standards are increasingly moving away documentation heavy manuals that force companies to adhere to stacks of procedural manuals which prevent adaptation to new procedures. The recently revised standards embrace subjective definitions for how companies define field-specific terms and rely on measurement of progress more than how well a procedure is followed to determine the success of a company in producing quality products. Current ISO standards focus more on identifying the particular task or activity that presents problems or delays in an organization rather than the old methods that involved writing procedure manuals to attempt to limit unknown variables that could raise issues

Because of the difficulties of direct specification Varga (2009) uses the key competences of the European Reference Framework (2007) for interpreting components of environmental competence. Using the mother language both in written and oral form is necessary to be able to understand and communicate information. Recognizing the problems is only the first step on the way of becoming more sustainable. Collecting appropriate background information, implementing action plans and discussing them require the adequate knowledge of the mother language and foreign languages as well. Digital competence allows data analysis and usage of modern information systems.
ISO 9001:2008 is a world-wide accepted standard for quality management systems. As such, ISO 9001:2008 focuses on a large variety of business activities – not merely on quality control. Implementing ISO 9001:2008 will affect virtually all of the business processes. The websites of ISO and the 9001 Council contain much information on ISO 9001 and how to implement it (Iso.org).
