The athletic programs in schools solely provide children with different ways to learn motor skills, develop fitness skills, and gain knowledge about physical activity. The physical benefits acquired from establishing a pattern of physical activity in a child’s life include “lowered risk for heart disease, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, obesity, and metabolic syndrome; [improvement of] various other aspects of health and fitness, including aerobic capacity, muscle and bone strength, flexibility, insulin sensitivity, and lipid profiles; and a [reduction] of stress, anxiety, and depression” (Kohl and Cook). In a standard United States physical education program, students learn about the health benefits obtained from participating in physically active activities, as well as the importance of continuing these practices throughout life. In elementary school, the athletics program emphasizes the development of fundamental locomotor, non-locomotor, and artful skills through dance, gymnastics, and games. The motor skill basis established during elementary years can increase children’s social, cognitive, and physical development, and could also increase the individual’s interest in physical activities later on in life. According to a study performed on the effects of physical activity on cognitive function, “Physical activity enhances memory and learning, promotes neurogenesis and protects the nervous system from injury and neurodegenerative disease” (Ploughman). The cognitive benefits of physical education are acquirable in many different modalities. Because children learn through a diversity of modalities (e.g., tactile, physical, visual), it becomes essential to choose the modality that fits the child best. Although the modalities are diverse, many children benefit from academic lessons accompanied with a physical aspect during the lesson. Therefore, by adding physical education to a child’s everyday lesson plan, the child could improve brain function and add depth to their learning. John F. Kennedy once said, "Intelligence and skill can only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is healthy and strong” (NDSHAPE). Research has demonstrated that children engaged in daily athletic activities show incredible motor fitness, academic performance, and attitude towards school versus their classmates (Kohl and Cook). Students who participate in sports remain physically active. Student athletes have practice and must keep “in shape” to compete against other high school teams. Researchers have said the younger population has grown obese. Students who remain in high school sports have a lower risk of becoming obese. Obesity is growing rapidly in the nation and having kids participate in sports will help the nation’s obesity rate decrease. The reason students stay healthy is because the practice may involve running, weight training, and flexibility to help stay in “shape”. Investigations conducted by various authors (Sport England 2001; Vickerman and Coates 2008) suggest that students with SEND take part in a smaller margin of physical activities within PE. He also highlighted that students with SEN do not take part in any sport as part of the extra curricular activities (Vickerman et al. 2003). Further research into this, it has been presented that students benefit socially, physically and mentally from participating in physical activity (Vickerman 2012; Vickerman et al. 2003; Kristen et al. 2002), which promotes ‘lifelong learning’, and participation in physical activities (Whitehead 2010).
In the U.S., sport is widely recognized as a tool of child development and health promotion; with 75% of parents of children in middle or high school saying they encourage participation (“Facts: Sports activity and Children”). This helps kids with health promotion and what your kid does to his body. People asked parents about playing sports positively and they said it helps them with physical health, giving the child something to do, teaching discipline or dedication, teaching how to get along with others, mental health, social life, skills to help in future schooling, and skills to help in a future career (“Facts: Sports activity and Children”). It helps kids with social life, mental health, and skills to help in future schooling. Individuals of youth were seen to spend the greatest proportion of time walking and standing and the smallest proportion of time conducting vigorous fitness activity such as jogging, running, etc. Both “game play” and “fitness activities” were reported to have the highest levels of youth engagement in moderate to vigorous physical activity coming out of consultation or discussions with the trainer. It is true that individuals should not be forced into something they don’t want to participate in, but if these students don’t get any exercise outside of school, where will they receive an appropriate amount of fitness? Paul Eberhardt, athletic director, intramural director and head coach of the McNair Marlins basketball team in Richmond, B.C., believes “that students don’t care about participating in P.E. anymore and we have to educate students on the benefits of Physical Education”. In the 1994-1995 school year there were 1,133 students enrolled at McNair High School but there were only four P.E. classes available, which meant approximately 120 students attended in these classes. The remaining 1013 grade eleven and twelve students had no Physical Education at all. This is an astonishing figure. “Many students participate in sports and recreation activities outside of school, but most of them get hardly any exercise at all.
Over the past decades our culture has changes dramatically. To which our nation was once a physically active nation. Yet now it seems that society discourages physical activity. The human race has been dependent on automobiles, discouraging people to walk or bike, increasing the chance of a poor life-style. Yet there are many factors that affect the achievement and maintenance of a healthy life. Young people are growing into a diverse society, which is characterized by rapid change, inactive work and leisure practices that influence unhealthy behaviors. By incorporating physical activity into peoples daily routine will increase their chances of being healthier, reducing certain diseases and learning how to avoid injuries. Physical education helps students improve their knowledge about health issues and practices that will lead to a more enjoyable life. Students playing and working in a team together develop social skills, teamwork, achieving goals, and development of self-esteem. Overall physical education provides the potential for a better life style.
Some activity clubs we provide include, dancing, running, jump roping, basketball and soccer clubs, just to name a few. These clubs encourage kids to stay active. Our PE program also sends out monthly newsletters to the parents that give them ways to help their child live a healthy lifestyle. Physical activity contributes to quality of life, psychological health, and the ability to meet physical work demands. Physical education can serve as a vehicle for helping students to develop the knowledge, attitudes, motor skills, behavioral skills, and confidence needed to adopt and maintain physically active lifestyles. The outcomes of a quality physical education program include the development of students’ physical competence, health-related fitness, self-esteem, and overall enjoyment of physical activity. These outcomes enable students to make informed decisions and choices about leading a physically active lifestyle. In early years children derive pleasure from movement sensations and experience challenge and joy as they sense a growing competence in their movement ability.
