Education is recognised as a social determinant of health by the World Health Organisation. "The condition in which people are born, grow, live, work and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life." (WHO, 2016). The factors closest to the individual, such as; lifestyle, personal choices and decisions influence physical health and mental wellbeing more than factors further away. This is where education can be identified, as it contributes and influences to health as it gives individuals the opportunity to gain a wider range of knowledge, not only in an academic sense, but in terms of physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. Looking at ones health as a whole, education and other determinants are contributing factors in up keeping a good healthy life. Nurses have a major role in addressing the determinants of health as they partake in health care practices, as well as assisting individuals and supporting with public health policies. Health professionals should continue to pay attention to risk factors of inequality and offer their patients the information and resources they need to help children in education and child care programs that benefit the whole family. Children have to be given help and support in order to achieve the grades they are predicted and to have good prospects for jobs in future. Nurses should encourage to critically reflect on practice and take action to improve a child's wellbeing. Children's rights are extremely important and should be treated with the highest of care, to ensure that needs are met. A person’s health along with the health of a community are influenced heavily by the social determinants of health. These determinants create a strong foundation for a healthy and proper development of a community (Public Health Agency of Canada, 2013). Further, a proper foundation will allow the children within the community to develop properly, which will foster their potential for intellectual and physical intelligence. This paper will explore the effects of healthy childhood development, personal health practices and coping skills, health services and income and social statuses with in the Maple Leaf neighbourhood. Further, this paper will explore how the above social determinants of health directly affect the students of St. Fidelis school. Lastly, this paper will explain how the rise in cavities within these children is an issue as well as approached to overcome this issue.
Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. Apparently there was an incident at school where a little boy was acting out and Bryan told our teacher that the little boy was agitated, and to give him some medication to calm him down. As demonstrated by Bryan, nursing is ongoing profession that promotes the health and well-being of individuals.

Socio-economic class or socio-economic status (SES) may refer to mixture of various factors such as poverty, occupation and environment. It is a way of measuring the standard and quality of life of individuals and families in society using social and economic factors that affect health and wellbeing ( Giddens and Sutton, 2013). Cockerham (2007 p75) argues: ‘Social class or socioeconomic status (SES) is the strongest predictor of health, disease causation and longevity in medical sociology.’ Research in the 1990s, (Drever and Whitehead, 1997) found out that people in higher SES are generally healthier, and live longer than those in lower SES.

Social determinants of health have attracted the attention of governments, policy makers and international health organisations over the last three decades (Hankivsky & Christoffersen 2008). This is because social conditions which people are born in, live and work play an important role in their health outcomes (WHO 2015). According to Kibesh (1200) social determinants drive health disparities, disrupts the human developmental process and undermine the quality of life and opportunities for people and families (ref). Thus, several theories have been developed over the years to provide in-depth understanding of the social determinants of health and to reduce health inequalities (Hankivsky & Christoffersen, 2008).
