The reasons we educate our children have changed over time. However, some of the core values remain the same. One of the most important purposes of schooling is the transmission of a culture from one generation to the next. It is important to pass on our culture, values, and beliefs to our children so we continue to have a cohesive population. Schooling offers opportunity to our children by teaching them valuable skills that allow them to be self-sufficient and lead successful lives. Schooling also serves to decrease the social ills those without an education suffer from. A final purpose of education is to create people who are active in civic life. All societies have used formal education to pass on their culture. Schools have been used for centuries to pass on religion, values, and other culturally significant principles. Our culture and curriculum are fully intertwined. When the colonists came to America they brought with them their culture and the way they educated their children reflected that. The first colonists were very religious people and their curriculum was very faith-based. It complimented the instruction they received at church and home. As immigrants flooded into the country, life changed dramatically. As the population spread west, the typical family and social dynamics rapidly changed. People became widely dispersed, and the church’s authority and influence was no longer as important. People soon realized the way they were used to educating their children needed to adapt to their new way of life. Initially only wealthy male children were educated. People might teach their girls to read and write their name, but many believed girls and women lacked the mental capacity to learn much beyond that. The purpose of schooling can be highly subjective, but some core purposes have persisted through time. These core values are important and will continue to be the driving force of education. Unfortunately, many times the idealized purposes of education are vastly different from the reality. Our education system is not perfect but it is constantly improving. Despite its flaws, our current school system does teach our children many important skills, both socially and academically. School gives our children a chance to reach their full potential and succeed in life. As our culture changes, so will our purposes behind educating our children.
Education is a very broad term that can be interpreted in an infinite number of ways. Nonetheless, despite one's definition of education, it can be said that education does in fact have some sort of a purpose or goal. Personally, I feel that education has become important in our world for all individuals, yet at the same time I believe that education has different purposes depending on the grade level.
According to the speakers in the film, the purpose of education is to have a well-informed public that can be active members of society and participate in the democratic process. The main priority of many schools thoughtout the United States is to teach to the standard tests and to concentrate heavily on language arts and mathematics. Many of the teachers in this film believe that the focus should be more balanced and should have more focus on civic education and having a more informed student. These teachers believe starting as early as kindergarten and integrating civic education into every subject in school.
Beyond the physical and moral benefits lies the fact that education also provides us with life skills. John Dewey illustrates his philosophy on the purpose of education, to meet the needs of the individuals and prepare people for life. (Gordon, 2003 p.33) Without education we would not be prepared to go out into this world and be productive members of society.
Education is a right of every citizen, so that the nation has a population of a critical and conscientious citizens, so that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life, and so that it’s more difficult for a government to directly manipulate public opinion.

In today’s Christian church this is a value we hold true to well. Setting genuine religious values and morals are very important in today’s world. Whether you choose to practice that religion or not, the core values that are indebted in you from your childhood follow you into adulthood. I believe that the purpose of education is to produce the next generation of leaders who are intelligent and have great character. This idea is supported in the article “The Purpose of Education” by Martin Luther King. Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights activist who fought for black and white people to have equal rights in America. He writes about the true purpose, and meaning of education in the article by saying, “Education must enable one to sift and weigh evidence, to discern the true from the false, the real from the unreal, and the facts from the fiction (MLK1).” This quote from the article explains that being academically educated is very important. I believe that the aim of education is to create well-rounded citizens in a democratic society. This means that students are not only being taught just the academic standards by also being taught social skills. The students will be able to be a citizen that will improve their society and be a person who is diverse and who is open to the differences in people. With this comes a couple of barriers, such as the desire to learn new things in both teachers and students in the classroom is lacking and the worker-as-machine model.

As a child develops in these four major areas there are more requirements or minimal expectations set for the student. Today you it is very difficult for an adult to get a well paying job without the proper background in education. I hope that by becoming an educator I can help students acquire the “want” to get the necessary background to do whatever it is they so choose. I plan to teach all of these aspects in my classroom alone.
The purpose of education has had very little change since the beginning of schooling, also education systems today in the United States have a purpose that provides little to no benefits to children. The purpose has evolved into preparing students to test, test, and test. Instead of providing students with opportunities to grow and find their passion(s), students are expected to learn a great load of material in a short time frame. With these methods and purposes, we are failing the children and ourselves. At some point, we must draw the line and realize this system is failing and it needs reconstruction.

This is why school and education are so important, because without these skills one cannot live up to his/her full potential or even function in society. My purpose as a teacher is to give students opportunities to succeed and not to give grades. My purposes are to make students aware of their capabilities and by discovering these capabilities develop a sense of self. The students do this by pushing themselves or trying to their fullest extent. By trying his/her hardest they will know their limitations. These areas are the purpose of education.
