The Edict of Milan, issued in 313 AD, opened the way for people in the Roman Empire to practice the Christian religion. With this edict of religious toleration came the right for Christians to worship openly. They also regained possession of their places of worship and all of the contents associated with these religious buildings. Not only did this allow freedom for Christians to worship openly, but they were also given the opportunity to have influence in the government and private sector of the Roman Empire. The far reaching effects of Christian influence around the world are still seen today. It is easy to conclude had the Edict of Milan not been adopted and religious toleration for Christians had not been declared, our world belief …show more content…

Constantine felt that the acceptance of Christianity would cause the religion to grow numerically and have greater influence in all areas of society. He also felt Christianity was the best religious choice for the people under his rule and beyond. Without the Edict of Milan, Christians would of been forced to continue secretly meeting in underground churches. Also, the pagan torture would have persisted and the confiscation and plundering of Christian churches would have still remained. Without the recognition of Christianity, the Christians would not have been able to maintain equal status with people from other religions. Constantine was able to remain true to his religious beliefs and Christianity was allowed to flourish in the open. The edict protected Christians from being tortured by the pagan leaders and restored their places of worship into the hands of Christian leaders. Having possession of their religious artifacts gave Christians encouragement as they returned to worship in their churches. Christian freedom led to their presence in community where they could openly express their religious beliefs and moral values. The pagans continued to try and prevent the growth of Christianity and more wars ensued but at least the Christians now had legal recourse. The most positive effect of the Edict of Milan was the lasting presence of Christianity from that time in history
