Recommended: Analysis of the fall of the house of usher

Edgar Allan Poe is forever identified with his eerie poem “The Raven” with his many gothic horror stories, and as the father of the detective story (Werlock1). Poe’s stories are known in America and Europe. Most of Poe’s stories are Gothic, which he describes them as “arabesque” a term that he felt best described as flowery (Wilson52). Poe proclaimed his writing a reaction to typical literature of the day, which he called “the heresy of the Didactic” for its tendency to preach (Wilson52). Some of Poe’s stories are also comedies. “The Fall of the House of Usher” was a nevertheless typical of Poe’s short stories in that it presents narrator thrust into a psychologically intense situation in which otherworldly forces conspire to drive at least one of the characters insane (Wilson53).Edgar Allan Poe had a difficult life after dropping out of college. He became a short story writer, one of his stories being “The Fall of the House of Usher”. “The Fall of the House of Usher” uses literary elements of symbols and settings to further the theme of evil.
When Edgar Allan Poe was young, his father left him and his mother died, he was then taken in by his god father, and his wife, who had no children. Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston Massachusetts on January 19, 1809 (Werlock1) Poe’s parents, David Poe Jr., and Elizabeth Arnold, who were both very talented actors (Werlock1). Before Edgar turned three, his father David Poe, Jr., had left Poe and his mother (Werlock1). Also, his mother had died after moving her destitute family to Richmond Virginia(Barney1).Poe was then raised, but not adopted, by his god father, John Allan, in Richmond, of Virginia (Barney1).Allan took his wife, Frances Valentine Allan, and Edgar to England to visit, and al...

...h his sister or if he is, indeed, being possessed by evil forces. Nevertheless, Poe’s portrayal of Roderick’s deterioration raises important questions about the causes, stages, and effects of insanity (Paragraph from Wilson 56).
In the short story, “The Fall of the House of Usher”, the point of view is told from our unknown narrator, whom comes to help fix the house, and help comfort Roderick Usher, but does not end up helping him. Also the main theme is evil since the house is evil. After Roderick buries his dead sister, Madeline, she comes back to life and kills Roderick, the unknown narrator runs for his life, and watches the house collapse. In the other themes, madness and insanity, is because Roderick is having mental and emotional breakdowns because of his sister’s death. AN interesting fact about Poe is that he loved cats. Poe’s own cats name was Catterina.

These substantiations seem to be interconnected in opposition to death, and by the end of the story, they overwhelm any masculine threat that appeared in the story. The pervading presence of woman in the interior and exterior of the Usher Manor is indicative of Roderick’s feminine qualities. Ultimately, Roderick’s inability to deal with his homosexuality- indicated by the house and Roderick himself- leads to the destruction of the “House of Usher” by those tendencies he tried to suppress.
