Knowledge Center analyst J. Gerry Purdy predicts that up to 75 percent of the paper- bound book readers of the world could switch to using eBook readers within 10 years if the eBook readers incorporate certain features. Purdy notes that today people do not use eBook readers over regular paper-bound books because they do not provide the person reading the book with a better reading experience. He describes 15 features he believes eBook readers must have in order for most people to want to use one instead of reading a paper-bound book. I will summarize these 15 features and comment on each from a personal perspective. 1. Correct size -- The best size for an eBook reader would be around same size as a regular paper-bound book and be very thin and light. I agree with this size and weight. Most people are used to an electronic device book being a small size in order to be considered portable. To get users to switch to a different format, the book must be an acceptable size. 2. Instant on/off -- It has to be able to be turned on and off instantly. I agree with this concept as well. Nobody is going to want to wait for the book to warm up. Paperback book readers expect a certain convenience of just opening the book and reading. Purdy explains that the eBook reader “would likely be based on Linux and operate like TiVo”. Since it is for reading and not for computing, this makes sense. 3. Great (natural) user interface -- You have to be able to use it without problems or complicated procedures. This is for me, a given. If it is complicated not many people will use it. 4. High-contrast, high-resolution, bright color display -- Readable is key. The eBook reader would have to have a screen that could be read in the sunlight as well as the darkness. The eBook reader displays of today have pretty good screens but they are slow. Also the eBook readers will need to be able to handle being moved around and held tightly. No flimsy screen will work here. I agree with this as well. If people cannot read the screen they will not tend to put up with the eBook reader for long. 5. Random access -- Purdy says that this basic idea should be retained from the current eBook readers.
This source considers the issue of converting to digital books, specifically as it pertains to the effect that this change would have on the global environment. Although the research does recognize that there are disadvantages to not having a physical copy of a book and to abandoning certain platforms that do not transfer well to a digital form, overall, these researchers conclude that publishers should move towards digital products not only for the sake of cheaper long-run costs, but also for the good that going paperless can do for the environment. There are many characteristics that can be associated with being a Level E reader. By being at the Level E area, Shelia should be able to think within the text itself. By thinking within the text you should be able to take apart compound words to solve them when struggling. Not only that but she should also be able to reread the sentence or beginning of a phrase to problem solve, self correct, or confirm. Readers at the Level E should also be capable of using what is known about a word to solve an unknown word while reading. Level E readers need to be able to notice details in pictures and use information to understand the text a little better. Readers at this level need to also be able to notice series of events in order and then link them to better understand the text.
In addition, textbooks are heavy to carry around and it takes longer to find a page. Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. Journalist Ellen Lee interview a student from Liberty University, and he states that he prefers digital textbooks because he can tap his iPad, opens the digital copy and quickly open the page. An idea that was destined for failure has now been made into the key source to get students and teachers more interacted while in a classroom setting. Tablets such as the iPad and the Microsoft surface have made this idea possible, showing students that there is another alternative to the traditional method which would be a printed version of the textbook. Tablets are portable computers that use a touchscreen as its primary input device, meaning that both keyboard and mouse are both physically located on the screen. Early Tablets were built to be used with a pen, today however tablets can be used with just one finger or multiple fingers with the support of multi touch input. Tablet have had a positive input on society especially students in school that are looking to get their work done in an engaging way and, not by moving a pen or pencil like it’s been done for decades. Tablets have proven to be the better tool for learning among students.
Reading printed books have many benefits to it. A piece of evidence that can related to this is that “the book is the oldest technology, we say. Look! It doesn’t even have batteries! (Gatward) This quote can lead to a result of having no worries when reading a printed book, with many benefits to it. For example if you were outside and you wanted to read a book you would have no problem reading, but if you were reading it online you might of need internet in order to read it, but not in printed book. Also printed books will not harm your eyes but online books on computer, phones can and doctor have said that we should limited the amount of screen. Another quote is that “reading printed books before bed can helps you fall asleep faster”. Paper has officially been replaced with iPads. Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system. Textbooks are reliable, they can be used by anyone, and there are enough textbooks for each student to have their own, and be able to take them home. Also, technology is impacting the way the brain receives information. Reading digital print isn't as productive for readers as printed text, and there is limited access to resources needed for tablets to be effective when used by students. While this is true there are benefits to using tablets and other forms of technology in the classroom. It is easier for teachers to have assignments emailed directly to them, or post assignments on the internet, the use of technology is required in many core classes, and textbooks are easily worn, and expensive.
