Eastern Philosophy Sincerity: Of all the virtues that exist which provide a means to obtain a moral lifestyle, I believe sincerity is the preponderant power. That is to say, sincerity, is the bedrock of a virtuous character and its value far exceeds any other by way of necessity. In order to achieve noble worth, an individual’s ethical foundation must be firmly secured. Sincerity entails a genuine honesty that is free from pretense, deceit and hypocrisy. Therefore, it stands to reason a sincere nature should be strived upon as the first and foremost quality an individual would seek to attain, prior to attempting any other virtuous acquisition. In other words, if a person cannot be genuinely honest with themselves, how could they possibly expect to construct a realistic moral way of living? Although, sincerity can be synonymous with honesty it is profoundly more straightforward. An individual has the potential to be honest and insincere at the same time, this contradicts the ideal of sincerity. Nagarjuna believed Nirvana could be realized in a lifetime, by rejecting the idea that a life cycle (birth, suffering and death) represents a genuine reality. In comparison to the Christian view of heaven, nirvana appears to be a strictly mental state, lacking the essence of a soul.
