During the early 1780’s farmers in Massachusetts were in great crisis because the land and the resources in which they used to start their farming were been taking away by the government. During the 1780’s farmers mainly borrowed money, land and even sometimes equipment they use to work on their farmland. There was great demand for organic crops during these times because of the war, and when the war ended this lead to a relative decrease in the demand for farmers goods which put the farmers in a very though positions because if the demand of their crops weren’t high enough then they wouldn’t be able to pay off their loans and equipment that they had borrowed during the years. Shay organized an uprising to shut down the courts and it was held at the court house, Shay and the farmers held this parade to show to the government that they were been mistreated and that the court should shut down the tax bill so taxes wouldn’t be collected and that the farmers land wouldn’t be taken away from them. Smith was more agreeable, the fact that a “little rebellion” is a good thing is moderately true because without a little rebellion what is the point of public liberty. Thomas Jefferson states that “the people cannot be all, and well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the fact they misconceive” Thomas Jefferson believed that rebellion was a way that people spoke out their mind about what they think is going wrong or what they don’t understand or what is working right in the government. Thomas Jefferson believed that when people speak out they provide a different perspective in a law. “If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty” Thomas Jefferson show how important the people was to government, he compares they quietness of the people to death of the forerunner of public liberty which show that if the people who are they pillars of the government decide to not be active In their duty of expressing the way they feel and the concerns they have about the government then the forerunner who are also the future of the government will bring dead to public liberty.
