For our TV character personality assignment, we chose Michael Scott from The Office. Michael Scott is 53, and lives in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is the Regional Business Manager at Dunder Mifflin Scranton, a paper company, leaving him in the upper-middle class. He was not married at the time of the episode that we watched. Michael’s personality can be shown through Psychodynamic theory, Humanistic Theory, Trait Theory, and Cognitive Social Theory.
In this episode of The Office, Dwight starts a fire in the office in order for the other employees to learn how to properly handle the situation. Stanley returns to the office and a CPR instructor comes in to try and teach the office how to do CPR. This goes poorly and ends up with Dwight cutting the face off of the mannequin and everyone else begins dancing to the song “Staying Alive.” Again Dwight is reprimanded by corporate and must apologize to the office. In order to reduce stress in the office, Michael comes up with a meditation ritual, but during this session he finds out that he is the reason for the stress when Stanley’s biofeedback machine goes off every time that he is near Michael.

The id is responsible for all needs and urges, while the superego for ideals and moral. The ego moderates between the demands of the id, the superego, and reality. However, Erikson believed that personality progressed through a series of stages, with certain conflicts arising at each stage. Success in any stage depended upon successfully overcoming these conflicts. The theory has become one of the most significant psychological approaches and its originator, Sigmund Freud, has become a major influence in modern psychology. The psychodynamic approach largely focuses on motivation and past experiences which develop and individual’s personality. Freud used the iceberg metaphor to outline the three states of consciousness and argued that only twenty percent of the mind represents the conscious. In addition he theorised that there was a pre-conscious mind which represents general memory. Finally, the unconscious mind which is essentially the reservoir of repressed or hidden experiences and desire.

The tip of the iceberg represents the part of the mind that is conscious, everyday thoughts. The iceberg just below the water’s surface represents the pre conscious, thoughts and information that can be retrieved easily. And finally the base of the iceberg is the unconscious part of the mind where fears, traumas and bad experiences are contained, almost impossible to retrieve.

The work ethic reminds viewers of the hard working blue collar class, because Chris is willing to work and sacrifice to overcome any hardship and preserve in order to provide the best for his son. While finishing his internship, he gets called down to the boss’ office once again where he is offered a permanent job at the company. This moment of realization causes an overwhelming rush of emotions for Chris and for the viewer as final captions on the screen describe how he later becomes a successful multi-millionaire and proceeds to open his own brokerage
Sigmund Freud is best known for his development and use of psychoanalysis. The theory of psychoanalysis focuses on the concept of how our unconscious thoughts, feelings, and emotions play an active role in our daily lives. The id, ego, and superego are the three mental zones that encompass our psyche. Each zone has a specific function: The id functions on the pleasure principle; the ego on the protection of the individual; and the superego on protection of society. The degree of which each zone has been developed can be broken down and then analyzed. These three zones can be visualized by imagining a pie cut into three slices.
