Dwight D Eisenhower History proves Dwight D Eisenhower was one of our best generals because of his level head when put under pressure and his ability to come up with a plan that was straight to the point and was well planned out. It was tense in the war room, everyone was holding their breath waiting for reports of the landings on Normandy. I imagine a few were smoking cigarettes, trying to calm their nerves but the one waiting with the most anticipation was probably Dwight D Eisenhower. The one who came up with the plan to attempt to land on the beaches of Normandy. Code named Overlord. What would Dwight say to the press if the plan failed explaining that the largest amphibious assault in history failed, meaning that all those lives lost were to no avail. David Dwight Eisenhower was born on Oct 14, 1890 in Denison Texas. Eisenhower is German for iron hewer or miner. The accounts on how it was changed to Eisenhower differ. The third of seven boys, his mother worried that his name be confused with his fathers. So she switched the first name with middle name resulting in the name, we know oh so well. Two years later in 1892 the family moved to Abilene, Kansas which Dwight considered his home town. He had a keen interest in exploring the outdoors, cooking, hunting and fishing. Even though his mother was against war, it was her large collection of history books that first started his interest in military history. He persisted in reading them and became avid reader in the subject. Dwight went to Abilene High School for his high school years and graduated with the class of 1909. He would have graduated in 1908 but because of a knee injury that got infected. In 1953 Dwight ran for Presidency against Adlai Stevenson. winning by a landslide. His presidency lasted 2 terms. Dwight was at the age of 62 when he was elected the oldest president to be elected. One of his main points was to build a interstate system. because of the looming cold war in a war where large city’s would be targets. he thought it would be a good way to help with the evac of the large city’s and would aid in military movement throughout the country. he also started NASA as a civilian space program. on March 28, 1969 at the age of 78 Dwight D Eisenhower died from congestive heart failure. Dwight was a man that was looked up to, he was a great man, a great president, a great gen and he was also so much more.
