Our lesson starts this week on a dusty road in Israel as the two disciples of Jesus were returning to their home from Jerusalem after witnessing a life altering event,
The two disciples were approximately nine miles into their slow, dusty journey home after witnessing the extreme barbaric and just how unjustly and cruel humanity is so often.
Sadly humanity is still easily capable of unjust outrages acts.
As the two disciples walked along that dusty road they encountered a stranger traveling in the same direction as they were.
Luke 24:17
17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast.

After I finished reading this information that is found in Luke chapter twenty four concerning those two disciples that were walking on the road to Emmaus I began to wonder who those people were.
I really didn’t have any understanding of who these two disciples actually were that day as they returned home from Jerusalem on that dusty road to Emmaus on the first Resurrection-day?
The first thing I thought I knew; was that it was two male disciples walking down the road that day.
You will recall that in Luke 24:18 we were given the name for one of the disciples walking on the road to Emmaus, the name given was Cleopas.
As I read different Scriptural accounts; the name of a certain woman is mentioned several times when you read the crucifixion and resurrection story.
When you think about that terrible day on Golgotha while Jesus Christ was being crucified do you recall who is named in Scripture as being present?
John 19:25 tells us the names of several people associated with Jesus who were witnessing that terrible event.

So when we return to that dusty road to Emmaus, we have information now that would make it seem logical that those two disciples discussing what had just occurred in Jerusalem had a very specific reason to be traveling together?
Cleopas wife was at the crucifixion of Jesus Christ; she was standing beside Mary the Mother of Jesus.
I think the evidence indicates that the two disciples were a married couple; Cleopas and his wife returning home to Emmaus.
I didn’t read anywhere where that Cleopas and his wife had invited and convinced Jesus to stay in their home that night and have supper with them.
But it would seem reasonable.
Cleopas and his wife walked and talked with Jesus but couldn’t see the truth.
I think many of us had a hard time believing the truth at one point in our lives.
So I think we all have a lot in common with the disciple Thomas.
Have you, are do you know someone who would fit the definition of a doubting Thomas?
Thomas put our thoughts if not our words up for everyone to see.
John 20:24b
But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not
