Is the United States actually the tremendous country everyone portrays it to be? In America, nearly one individual is killed or injured in a DUI related accident every thirty minutes (“Drunk”). While every forty minutes an innocent victim is killed by an intoxicated driver. In comparison to other countries around the world the United States was ranked the eighth most dangerous country for drivers in 2007 (“Atal”). Many do not know the life threatening results that may occur when they have been drinking and then choose to drive. Individuals say that driving under the influence will be a one time deal, but in reality this habit will continue to take effect. Statistics show that nearly eleven thousand deaths occur each year because of a DUI type of accident (“Drunk Driving Statistics”). Alcohol is used a depressant which reduces the activity in the nervous(“Alcohol”).The effects that drinking alcohol has on the body can either be short term, long term, or both. Alcohol disorients the brain and can cause blackouts, memory loss, and more if an excessive amount is consumed. Countless amounts of effects can arise from drinking alcohol and deciding to drive. The risks of crashing, dieing, killing another human being, receiving a DUI, or even being placed in prison increase dramatically. In certain occasions the effects may have a heart breaking effect that will stay with the person forever. In 2006, Jessica Rasdall and her best friend Laura Gorman were having a few drinks one night at a club. Later that night Rasdall choose to get behind the wheel of her car. Before the girls reached their destination Rasdall had crashed and killed her Gorman. Rasdall was now being charged for killing Gorman. Today, Rasdall travels around to schools and other locations the discuss that day and how she wishes that it was her in Gorman’s place today (“Goldberg”).
This story not only shows how drinking and driving can have a short term and a long term effect on an individual. In the blink of an eye Rasdall's life was now changed forever. This is only one story of billions of people who have been in a drunk driving accident. Some may not even believe any situation similar to this one will happen to them in their lifetime. Studies prove that nearly three out of ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol related accident at least once in their lifetime(“34”).
