Drunk Driving And Drinking And Driving

Driving while intoxicated or drunk is very dangerous resulting in injuries and even death. This is a huge national problem that can be prevented from happening. “Statistics reveal that most related accidents are the leading cause of death for the ages between 16-24.” (Hanson) Many teens and early adults are peer pressured to drink and end up driving intoxicated or drunk. When driving intoxicated, your short term memory and at often times your reflex is also impaired so you don’t have that quick response to go from pressing the gas pedal to your brakes or from swerving. Therefore, drinking and driving is a cycle that will never end. However, we can address this by stopping drunk drivers by making cabs mandatory at any location when needed, sobriety check points, and alcohol education classes. According to the article “United States Drunk Driving Fatalities,” “1.4 million drivers are arrested for drinking under the influence.” (MacGregor and Collins) Many people don’t realize the consequences and danger they’re putting themselves and others in when they get in a vehicle intoxicated or drunk. Teens and young adults are peer pressured to drink; they have no one to call and friends are too careless not to let other friends drive and end up in a car accident because they were intoxicated. They ruin other people’s lives as well as their own, injuring or even killing loved ones because of a regretful decision. “Although the proportion of crashes that are alcohol-related has dropped dramatically in recent decades, there are still far too many such preventable accidents.” (Hanson) Drinking and driving will never end because of poor individual decisions, we need to do something even more effective to bring down the percentage. We can star... ... middle of paper ... ... they made. The education class also helps people that have already been in trouble with the law by drinking and driving. The class should be mandatory for them so that they do not make the same mistake more than once. The class will be helpful in many ways showing how alcohol effects the body after being consumed and the ability to operate vehicles. In conclusion, all these preventatives such as mandatory cabs around the nation at any location when needed, sobriety check points in small towns and big cities, and alcohol education classes to not only adults but to teens as well, will help stop the problem and reduce the percentage of drinking and driving. With thoughtful preventions like these to take the extra step to help our nation will make the world a better place and become a more responsible community. DWI and DUI’s are not acceptable and we can stop this!
