Driverless cars are beginning to look less like science fiction and more like reality. Google, Mercedes, Tesla, Uber, Volkswagen, Volvo and other brands are all working on their own versions of driverless cars. They believe that they will be able to release fully autonomous cars to the market between 2019 and 2024. The idea of driverless cars started much earlier than most people would believe, with plans dating back to the 1920’s.
In 1925, a radio firm called Houderia Radio Control released the first ever radio-controlled driverless car. Due to the successfully outcome of the test car, the decision was made to produce a full-sized car based on the same theory. In 1958, the lab successfully tested the car on a large stretch of the public highway in America. Detector circuits were buried in the pavement displayed as lights on the side of the road. These detector circuits sent impulses to guide the car in the right direction. Throughout the 1950’s and 60’s researchers continued to make advancements on the driverless cars. These vehicles offer many benefits to society, such as improvement of safety, reduced air pollution and reduced congestion. They have the potential to change aspects of the economy, including land use, medical, legal and insurance industries. Previous research on automation and changes in employment suggests that the impact on labour will depend on the service provided by the worker. Hundreds of jobs could be lost in sectors such as trucking, deliveries, taxis and parking. Driverless cars will share data over the internet which is causing concerns to society of threat of cyberterrorism.
Although, driverless cars have the potential to eliminate jobs, they can also increase demand for new tasks and jobs such as maintenance of software. Governments can bring in regulations to slow down the process of driverless car and prevent them from taking over humans
