I believe the age for drinking alcohol shouldn’t be lowered to 18. For example, some kids are still 18 years old in high school. This shows that more kids might be drunk in class because they have the freedom to drink at such a young age. This also shows that the mind isn’t fully developed and is more likely to do ridiculous things. In addition, it could cause more accidents because there would be drivers that haven’t had very much experience driving (2 years). This shows that the death rate for teens could go up. This also shows that the population could go down because the more teen deaths now, the less amount of adults there could be in the future. Furthermore, it could cause the future parents (that are 18 now) to become addicted to alcohol.
Lowering the legal drinking age would create problems such as infringing on the mental and physical development of the young drinker. As a respected author, Matt Nagin puts it, “The late teens and early twenties are formative years where character building, leadership in the community, and scholastic excellence should be emphasized. Alcohol detracts from all of these.” In other words, Nagin believes that the teen years are an imperative time of growth in a person’s life. Scientists have proven that the brain is not fully developed until the age of twenty five. If Nagin’s argument is correct, and I believe it is, then people should understand that scientists have proven the negative affects that alcohol has on the development of the brain. Alcohol has the power to kill brain cells and damage growth hormones. By making alcohol legally accessible to an eighteen year old, we are literally poisoning his or her brain.
Lowering the drinking age to 18 would make a lot of sense in the world. Lowering the drinking age to 18 would make more sense. It would be better for the teens that drink on college campus. In the end, one could feel that lowering the drinking age to eighteen could actually show signs of promise in equality for all American adults. Changing this law could decrease the tendency of young adults to break the law, and could train them to have more self-control. People that oppose changing this law, have several arguments that make them believe their cause is right. They believe that “By lowering the drinking age, it would put a societal stamp of approval on the damage that alcohol can cause in the developing brain” (Pros and Cons of Lowering the Drinking Age). They also argue that “Lowering the drinking age will invite more use of illicit drugs among 18-21 year olds” (Drinking Age ProCon.org).

This law was carried out at the federal level and forced all states to raise the minimum drinking to 21 or face cuts in federal-aid cuts in their highway funding.
