In Maus by Art Spiegelman Anja underscores her response to Vladek’s suggestion to send Richieu away by using dramatic body language as well as facial expressions to ossify her thoughts on the crazy idea. Her actions showed that she stands by her answer and that it would not change it anytime soon. In the image Anja is holding Richieu vigorously skintight, as if he were part of her. This expresses how deeply she cares for him, and that she was always going to keep him by her side. Anja’s facial expression tells Art how serious she is about not giving Richieu away to anyone. The expressions of the people in Hot Rhythm are those of carefree people enjoying life. However, Motley’s grandmother’s expression is very serious depicting the struggle of a former slave (Brown, 2014). The lines on the face of Motley’s grandmother define depth. The features and volume of her face are defined with deep lines above the brow. The lines around the nose and below the mouth show signs of age using shading to help create the shape of the face. The faces in Hot Rhythm are less defined using circular shapes for fullness. Most of the eyes in Hot Rhythm are closed. In Portrait of My Grandmother the eyes are open and glimmer with the use of light hues of brown. Even though the eyes are open, the lines in the face of Portrait of My Grandmother highlight the features and give character to the eyes. The contour lines around the eyes suggest volume by using dark shades around the eyes.
As I watched the 1982 film "Victor Victoria," I noticed that there were going to be so many different types of non-verbal cues throughout the movie. Therefore, I decided to choose and write about the non-verbal messages mostly made from the director, Victoria and a few from King Marchand and Norma. Most of the non-verbal cues projected from Victoria were in silence. For example, her changing into the men's clothing and receiving a masculine hair cut was her way of really getting into the role of Victor. In the beginning of the movie, Teddy's old lover comes by to get his belongings when he finds Victoria dressed in his clothes, Victoria then goes to physically punch the man, which in my opinion was her way of reassuring the man she is just
The story "Maus" is written in a rather unconventional way because it is written in a graphical novel format. This format tends to grasp the attention of those from a younger audience. However, since the story is about the Holocaust many critics think that it may have not been written in the right format. The author Art Spiegelman wrote it in this form not to make light of the situation but also not to make it seem like any other kind of Holocaust format. Which is sometimes considered boring and the viewers it draws attention too are those of an older age.
Every choice you take with ultimately impact your life. In “The Laughing Heart” by Charles Bukowski the author creates a theme of; your not living until you seize opportunities in life. In “The Journey” by Mary Oliver the author creates a theme of; you have to take the journey to find yourself. In each of these poems the authors use tone and figurative language to develop the overall message.
Throughout the book Maus, we get to see a glimpse of the suffering Vladek went through during the Holocaust. Starting off before the war started we see the Vladek is living a care free life in Poland. He is described as a handsome bachelor with many woman at his fingertips. After he decides to settle down with Anja, his live becomes even more worry free. Vladek is a family man through and through, and would do anything for them. This, to me, is his defining feature before the Holocaust. Even though he states later in the book that the camps were every man for himself, you can tell that Vladek truly doesn’t believe in that. He tries time and time again to get his family and friends to safety even after numerous attempts go poorly. When he gets separated from them, he makes sure they are doing fine, and puts himself in positions to gain better treatment of his few friends. Even after the war Vladek is still the same family driven man he was before. He wants his son Art to live with him so they are close together, and he takes Mala back just for the company. Vladek doesn’t want his son to leave, since he knows he might not ever see him again due to his health. This is the same type of feeling he felt in the camps, when he saw his family get torn apart. As for this says about society is that people who people like Vladek would survived the Holocaust, value family and friends even more. Many people, especially ones in the Jewish community, lost multiple generations of family, and those who survived value family higher than anything else. Body language is non-verbal communication where your body reveals unspoken, usually subconscious, feelings and intentions physically. Body language is expressed through eye movements, facial expressions, body postures and gestures. It plays a part in how humans judge you while communicating or first meeting which is what we do when we see a characteristic we wouldn’t tolerate to possess or envy of the person which drives you to find faults within that person. Body language also indicates a persons state of mind; whether they are alert/attentive, bored, interested or nervous. Before language was developed, cavemen and other early ancestors used body gestures to communicate and judge each others body postures and voices to guess what they wanted to get across. Body language reflects who we are. One of the reasons television was so groundbreaking because radio couldn’t display facial expressions and body language. In 1960, Kennedy and Nixon had debates. Nixon was sweating, looking nervous whereas Kennedy wore makeup and looked straight at the camera to show conviction. People listening to the debates on the radio believed Nixon had won and the people watching it on television thought the opposite. After that event, non-verbal communication was taken more seriously.

The presence of nonverbal messages in our communication is very important. Following the text, researchers have estimated it is up to “65 percent of social meaning we convey in face-to-face interactions is a result of nonverbal behavior” (131). The movie “Mrs. Doubtfire” is a typical example about the interactions among characters, also with audience. Several scenes in this movie show us the effects of nonverbal messages in communication, especially through the character Daniel, who disguises himself as a middle-aged British nanny in order to be near his children.
Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel Maus unfolds the story about his father Vladek Spiegleman, and his life during the WWII. Since Vladek and Art are both the narrators of the story, the story not only focuses on Vladek's survival, but also the writing process and the organization of the book itself. Through these two narrators, the book explores various themes such as identity, perspective, survival and guilt. More specifically, Maus suggests that surviving an atrocity results in survivor’s guilt, which wrecks one’s everyday life and their relationships with those around them. It accomplishes this through symbolism and through characterization of Vladek and Anja.

Despite how us humans are prone to communication, communication is a complex phenomena. That is why Personal and Scholarly concepts are made, to act as a guide, making communication easy. Personal theories are based on, one’s own observation about how they themself communicate. Scholarly theories and concepts are based on evidence and research. Though the fundamentals of personal and scholarly theory are different, they can often relate to each other. My two personal theories are related to non-verbal communication. While conversing, I have a tendency to avoid eye contact. I usually have to refrain myself from averting my eyes while conversing. American culture needs no excuse to gather in small or large groups for nearly any occasions. It could be a simple gathering of friends to discuss books, watch a movie or even just relax and enjoy ones company. Although, the American culture is formed on informal encounters, we tend to be time conscientious; therefore appointments are expected to be kept and timely. For that reason, if I were invited to a gathering, my promptness would be expected. Furthermore, time is of the essence. Thus, once I arrived I would eat and chat and leave rather quickly. I may even bring an unexpected quest to the gathering. Generally, the atmosphere is relaxed, therefore, little or no emphasis on seating arrangements or guest lists. Gatherings are on a
Facial expressions have been studied for years and continue to be studied now by researchers. From all the studying that has taken place on facial expressions, there have been two major viewpoints that have spawned. The first viewpoint is emotional expression, this viewpoint says that facial expressions are sporadic and come from raw emotions. The expressions only portray emotion and nothing more. The other is the behavioral ecology viewpoint; this states that the expression is not for just emotion, but the opposite. This viewpoint says that expressions are used or enhanced by the actions and expressions of those around you. This viewpoint states that it is more of a social behavior. I conducted a study that contained 10 observations of other people participating in regular actions. I waited and watched their facial expressions and what may have caused them. From this, I determined which viewpoint their facial expressions aligned with. I plan to compare the results and give some generalizations of my findings. I will also share any interesting things I may have found while observing the people. Then, I will conclude by stating my own personal opinion on the two viewpoints judging by what my results were and what I actually believe.
Poise’s untitled advertisement, published in People Magazine, argues that family relationships are more important than life’s inconveniences. The advertisement shows a mother and daughter laughing, smiling, and playing barefoot with hula hoops in a backyard on a summer day. In the top right corner, there is chalk text that says, “protect the moments that matter the most” and on the bottom left corner is a picture of the Poise pads product. The ad’s main point is to establish that Poise pads are the key to cherishing life’s precious moments uninterrupted. The purpose of the advertisement is to sell women their product, Poise pads, to avoid ill-timed bodily functions and to preserve life’s small moments.
